Makeshift fullback problem

faddy the blue

Player Valuation: £35m
So its clear for 2nd year running we've left the full back position grossly neglected. Myko seemed to get better last season but himself and aging Seamus have a terrible injury record. The latter should just retire from international duties as his body is hardly coping with 1 competition, never mind 2. The less said about Young the better. Patterson I'd be surprised gets to play half season even with his lack of gametime and brittle body. On top of that our recruitment team decided to ship Godfrey off (far better back up at either flanks).

That leaves any manager (even if Dyche is sacked) to find alternate options within the squad.

My take would be to sacrifice Garner from CM to RB and sacrifice Mcneil to LB. Give Dixon a few minutes in 2nd half or give him the odd start if he convinces. Both Garner and Mcneil did a decent job last season there too. Both can deliver decent crosses and have good fitness.

The answer was to buy a left and right back, or loan some. Someone like Tierney or Chilwell would have been great at left back. Right back I’ve no idea but this is typical of us. We buy a big unit centre back for 16m and don’t play him. I would have rather spent that money on a left and right back, everyone knows it. Just not the club. We cannot continue to play 35+ year olds in a league where the attackers are rapid, much younger and a lot fitter, it doesn’t work. That’s why nobody else does it.

We bought the full back that Dyche wanted, Young. We keep giving contracts to the full backs that Dyche wants - Coleman and Young. He could have played Dixon yesterday, chooses not to. He could have played Patterson most of last season and chose not to.

Why would it be different with anyone else coming in?

Garner is plainly not a right back mate, he was absolutely terrible there yesterday.

Not sure why you think having a full back with a decent cross matters in a Dyche side either, since when are they ever far forward enough to get one in.

Simplest answer is you play Dixon (and actual right back) in the spot. OR you sod off fullbacks go to a 3-5-2 or variant thereof

If only we had a young, fit, rapid right back already at the club.....

Dixon/Patterson and McNeil have to be wing backs in a 5-3-1-1 formation for me. Ndiaye behind DCL.

Won't happen, yet would almost certainly yield much better results.

Frankly, any fullback Dyche gives his blessing to sigming is going to a Myko type. Traditional, defence first sort.

We need to sign for the mid-long term and aim to get more flexible and dynamic options. So probably best done with Dyche well off the scene.
The damage done by the Waiter cannot be underestimated. Booting out Digne (who was excellent yesterday) and James instantly lost us 85% of our creativity. Bringing in £15m Mykolenko, dear me, he's a £2m lower league player at best.
