Trust me, as a forward I much prefer keepers who stand there waiting to dive than those who force you into making a decision. And Howard's gone to ground because he thinks Van Persie's about to shoot anyway. It's like a penalty in that situation, got to just hope for the best.
Howard's got no chance if he just stands there, but if he goes to ground there's a chance he'll nip the ball away, a chance that Van Persie will play the ball straight at his outstretched body, a chance that Van Persie will overhit his touch and be forced to stretch while hitting his shot. Plus in this situation I think he's just literally fell over because he's on his toes about to spread himself.
Basically he had no chance and anyone blaming Howard in any capacity needs to step away from the crack pipe.
