I wouldn’t class Gueye as an out and out destroyer though. He’s far from useless on the ball.

If we want to move to the next level we need to find a player who is like a young Fernandinho or Alonso, Busquets, Casemiro etc. They’ve got to be able to both destroy but also create from deep. We wouldn’t tolerate a full back that can only do one side of the game yet we seem to indulge midfielders with only one string to their bow.

At a push I could understand carrying an absolutely top striker who doesn’t work off the ball but apart from that every one else in the lineup has to be able to work in defence and attack both ways. Winning a ball in midfield then just laying it off backwards or sideways a few yards isn’t good enough anymore.

People seem to be obsessed with a potential midfield of Gueye and Ndidi or Doucoure. The same way they were with Schneiderlin when he arrived. The lot of them couldn’t pick a forward pass between them and definitely can’t control the tempo of a football match in order to win consistently. I’d much rather have Bernard Gomes and another natural player in there that can actually play football.

Yet the RS make the final of one champs league, win the next one and almost win the premier league with a bog standard midfield 3.

What we have at the back and up top will dictate the midfield combination. The order of the day seems to be the attacking threat coming from three forwards and 2 full backs.

There are anomalies to every formula and it would be interesting to see how 3 ball players would get on in a midfield 3 - personally I think you need a mix. Leicester won the premier league with 2 spoilers in the middle.

There’s more than one way to skin the proverbial.

Which would make sense if we had a manager who plays like Klopp does but last season Silva had us playing with Gomes raking the ball off the centrebacks, full backs pushing up, moving the ball across the pitch, through the lines to Siggurdson. If we want to play that way we need better midfielders.

If we want to play like Leicester then we would need to buy players like Kante and have a lightning quick striker. Instead we have players like Bernard and Siggurdson who don’t suit counterattack at all. We’re not able to throw world record fees at keeper and centreback to allow us to play a tactic where our midfield can just press forward like Liverpool’s do and allow their front three to wait on the counter.

I think this is fair. It's not that our midfield is poor, it's more that to move forward it might just be a bit ill suited.

Doucoure and Ndidi are very different players. But part of playing football is winning a ball back when the other team has it. It would be nice to have someone who can both support the offense and play defense. Doucoure can play football. He and Capoue killed us last year.

It's a bad combo. Sigurdsson, Gomes, Gana are all good players, but don't seem to fit very well together.
I still think we are going to buy a midfielder or even 2 this year because if any of those three are injured we are starting to play midfield tetris and fit Davies into a place he doesnt usually play.
