There's some truth in that. However, the fundamanetal point re,ains that the DoF has stated that it was Zouma or go with what we had. So you can talk all day about former regimes and needing to clear up the mess inherited, but that act of vandalism is down to him.

No Dave...he didn't say that . He said they wanted a centre half in particular Zouma. He didn't say Zouma was the only option. As someone said above, the market for centre halves wasn't good except for one flavour of the month at £80 million, and a couple half veteran released players like CAhill.

Its easy to justify. Why just buy in average players for the sake of it.
The market for CBs was very poor this window.
So do we bring someone in that is going to end up being the type of transfer where two years later we can't off load, like we already have?
Or we should just get a average player on loan. The players we want would not generally agree to a loan
(Sidibe could be good, a risk worth taking esp considering his views on JJ)
Would we have got someone better on loan than Holgate, also requiring extra energies to settle in and getting to know it all

There's also the added motivation and impetus/ momentum this puts through the youth side.
Brands is taking the policy that we'd rather rely on Gibson than do a half arsed deal.
And also that Gibson might come through and show he's good enough
You have to manipulate things to allow the stars to align.
It might be Gibson, it might not, but do we not want to allow for the possibility for these things to happen?

Also there is less wriggle room giving the amount of players we don't want still on the books.
Given, we can't have it all right now.

At the end of the day we are not there yet with the whole top 6 thing.
I don't think we should make an arse of ourselves trying to buy instant success.
We're getting there in a measured, sensible, assured way. We've improved in other areas.
If the side does well this season we're def getting a good CB next season.
Whether it was Kenwright not willing to spend the cash or Walsh pissing it away, this seems a hell of a lot better.
Gibson is nowhere near forst team level mate. The manager knows that too.

Brands dragging Gibson into the fray was not impressive, tbh. And it's placed pressure on the lad if he ever does get a fist team chance too.

That's what @Deco s transcript said. And some of us are relying on others like him for the full interview because we cant get access to the OS for it...which is a bit 'kin snide BTW.

Maybe they just want to communicate with the smitten?

How is that snide? We complain about the club being poor commercially and then it offers in depth, insightful content exclusively to members thus encouraging others to become members... and then you complain.

He was negotiating with Chelsea right o the death of the window. That's who he wanted.

BTW, if there's a discrency in what he said word for word then that's down to the club for making his interview available only to some and not others. Is there a complete transcript of this interview anywhere, seeing as though the club want to narrow the audience of people who can access the podcast?

I've been a member of evertonfc.com for years mate...I cant get access.

Just so I’m clear Dave, have we moved away from the narrative of a DoF who lacks character and goes into hiding refusing to talk, and moved back to the DoF who loves the limelight too much, and should just stay behind the scenes doing his job? Just trying to keep up.

Well that's up for debate really isn't it? Yes, there''s an interview. But it's with the club only...and the content of it is exclusive to some Evertonians...so YOU answer the question for me.

Well even what @Deco wrote doesn't suggest it was Zouma or no one for that position. From the actual quotes, which I'll transcibe below, he says we wanted a centre half, primarily Zouma, everyone else we wanted wasn't as a good so why spend money for the sake of it. You know, smart decisions.

Brands actual quotes on CB:

Inerviewer: Asking about a clear and detailed plan of what he wants to achieve in the market.

MB: "We were pretty close to what we [wanted to] achieve the only thing we didn't achieve was, one of our goals, was the central defender and especially Kurt Zouma. Yeh because of the ban at Chelsea that was a difficult one but okay, from the other side we know we take a decision not to renew Jagielka for example to give Mason Holgate a little bit more perspective for his future because he's a very talented player. We also have a very young boy, Lewis Gibson, that had a very good pre-season and of course he has to step up more than he did already - it's a player with a future in Everton. I think that's also important to give some perspective to the academy.

Interviewer: "It seemed very significant that when you were looking for another centre back you didn't just panic and bring somebody in for the sake of it and there seems to be a real responsibility to make sure you're spending the clubs wisely and only bringing in players who are going to improve the squad."

MB: "Yeh definitely because, uhm, I think that's a very important thing that if we spend money we have to do it the right way. I think if you go lower than a level than you want then I think it's better to do nothing and to uhm look at your own academy and I think that's more important also too. We have some young boys that are knocking on the door of the first team squad and okay they are still a long way to go but you have to give them also an idea that okay there is something possible here."

Neither of those are a position that I’ve argued. So my answer is he’s neither of those. But you’ve argued both positions, so probably need to pick one and stick with it.

Thanks for the quoattions.

However, dont they precisely underline the fact he had all his eggs in the Zouma basket?

....you're right to request clarity on that, because look at what he did to account for his window: gave an interview to the OS with what looks on the fragments I;ve read so far kindly supplied by others to have been a very friendly pliant and accommodating line of questioning. And the club's decision to limit access to the DoF's thoughts on the window is a disgrace.

Not really. It says to me he was the top target and he didn't want to spunk money on anyone that wasn't as good as him.

Whether I rate Zouma or not (I don't) is a different matter.

I think it's nice to have someone that's careful with our pennies. When we needed a striker we settled for Tosun at £27m and look how that turned out.
