2020/21 Marcel Brands

You guys have to understand he was thrown a hospital pass before he took over the reins. We are only now getting to the end of Walsh's chapter 4 years later. Brands has also had to deal with the owner meddling into affairs which saw us by all accounts buy players like Iwobs, James and Allan. All of these take us further from what he wanted to fashion.

Then you have the manager situation, Silva was already hired when he signed. Ancelotti and Benitez are also clearly the owner's men. It is nigh on impossible to create a clear roadmap when you have that kind of turnover. Carlo was clearly promised he could have x, y and z to come here. We'll see how much influence Benitez has over the coming months. The fact we haven't wasted a huge amount of money shows we are either broke or at last we are moving away from the kind of purchases that have crippled us over this era.

Brands has been unlucky with Gomes and (up until now) Gbamin and the only real stinker has been Delph (see above for Iwobi). Generally he has bought reasonably, not over paying and certainly we are more balanced than under Walsh and Koeman/Allardyce. Perfection only exists in your dreams ladies and gentlemen, there will be mistakes along the way but hopefully the direction of travel will be correct and we get a more balanced side and players that we get are the right sort in terms of attitude and hunger. How well we do also depends on having a stable platform where the manager is here for more than two minutes and how much interference there is from the top.

Well worth a watch

Bit of a knee jerk but id probably prefer Ashworth and Potter to Brands and Benitez.

They seem to have a logical way forward and Ashworth explaining how they appoint managers to follow the club style and targets makes alot of sense when compared to us doing the opposite and swapping managers with different styles all the time.

Pickford
??? Mina Godfrey Digne
??? ???
James
??? DCL Richarlison

Whichever metrics you use;

A: Moshiri/ Brands / Walsh / Unsworth / Manager signed this/that player

B: XYZ player should be in there

Etc etc

-- Its broadly agreed that those 7 players are 'top 6' quality.

If we signed 2 players this summer and 2 players next summer of 'top 6' quality then out first eleven could look pretty good on paper.

We should always be looking to improve the first eleven.

Brands has just over 3 weeks to do this.

Its beginning to look like hes been on holiday since last summer.

The last comment is regularly repeated guff. We are clearly in a situation where we have to sell first. This will drag into the final days of the window.

We will be spending circa £20mil on Begovic/Townsend/Gray...agent fees / sjgning on fees / wages.

Lets not pretend they're free/cheap...theres still a cost attributed to them.

As for Brands "having a year off":

Gray went to Leverkusen in Jan...
Townsend was released by Palace...
Begovic wasnt promoted...

Its highly unlikely these three players will have been extensively scouted over the past season and earmarked to be signings this window.

All the evidence points to them being 'signings of circumstance' since the window opened.

Ergo, Brands may well have taken a year off from first team transfers...

I don’t have a problem with criticism of Brands signings, but I think it is disingenuous to suggest he has been on holiday.

Perhaps hes the new head of recruitment to replace the Derby guy who jumped ship?

I see it as when the owner(s) and board keep moving the goal posts and meddle in the roles of the DoF, it's difficult to truly actually judge Brands on his role.

He's had some hits and some misses, but as you mentioned he's been saddled with previous signings and since then has had signings forced upon him.

Has he he truly known what direction for us to go towards in terms of signing and how much he's actually had to spend when the owner spends it elsewhere?

I'm not suggesting he's perfect or does not warrant criticism, yet rather when you (the owner) muddy the waters it's likely you will get muddled results.

Stick Allan into that list of players for sure

Hope he hated the heat in Miami on his holiday with the team when he could have been doing his job and looking for a RB that we've needed for over 2 years to replace Coleman
