Marco Materazzi question

Maverick

Player Valuation: £8m
So I was in Rome/Milan over the past 10 days or so and I picked up a Materazzi Inter jersey just because I liked the colors (ya'll know where my allegiances are, so hush)

Anyway, at the time I didn't know he was a former Blue. After reading about his time at Goodison, it seems like that was the worst he played in his career.

For those of you who were fans back then, what were your thoughts on him then? And have they changed at all?

He was a thug who damaged his own players in training, never played well and got sent off and I think was suspended for more games than he actually played. Or at least close to it.

I was exaggerating slightly, but

Materazzi spent 1998-99 with Everton (where he was sent off three times in just 27 games)

Never played well, and got booked many times also.

I personally think he could not handle the pace of the English game and ended up being too clumsy. He did ok when we sold him to Perugia though.

i saw him play a few occasions. he was tough and quite skillful for us at the time. he was a member of a cracking team that broke up after one season and was never given chance to be added to.

materazzi and dacourt.. it was a shame we never saw them for a second season.

He was a gangling giant, no grace or basic skill relying on his height and elbows to intimidate, basically he was a yard dog of the first order more suited to the pub leagues than EFC, another reason to thank Christ we got shut of Walter Smith who's star signing he was.

I remember going to a cup game can't remember which one it was. we was playing sunderland and it went down to penalties. He missed, cue my hatred for him. :D

Yeah. That wouldn't have helped when it came to looking for a reason to like him. haha

Probably no worse a player than he is now, but he's nearly ten years older and experience is so important for central defenders. He's learnt all the tricks of the trade now so he can be a [Poor language removed] without getting sent off ;)

fair enough. i thought he was a good strong player for us who went on to play for inter milan and win a world cup. i would have liked to have seen him stay for his contract.

My only memory of him playing for us is when he sat crying by the pitch after being sent off.

After kicking an advertising board. He was told if he got sent off again he would be docked 2 weeks wages you see....

To be honest I liked him. Good defender. Well, obviously, otherwise he wouldn't have went on to captain Italy.

He was too rough for the PL. Sent off 3 times in the league I think and was too hot-tempered. Many recless things, but he did get the respect of his opponents though. I guess the thought of a broken leg makes some strikers hesitate in some situations... On the other hand, the opponents knew he was unstable and where good at frustrating him giving him yellow and red cards... and a lot of freekicks.

I still stick by the EPL was too fast for him and his clumsiness made him look rough. He couldn't take the pressure and the ferocity and could not control his temper and lashed out. Just my opinion of him of course.
