I’d agree if we did have a bloated squad but if you take away the current loanees with zero future and the likes of Niasse then it isn’t a massive squad.

You can’t just have a bunch of first team ready players and then sell everybody else. What use is an academy then? Young players aren’t afforded the same amount of minutes/leeway in the PL compared to other leagues.

Holgate hasn’t been out on loan before so think it’s worth it. We could sell him but what happens if one full season of football turns him into what would have been our best defender?

....I particularly referenced my post ‘first team squad’ loanees. It’s clearly different sending the Acadamy boys on loan. For me, the general point about sending first team squad out on loan is that the manager is not intending to use them, either in the short-term or never.

The never category include the likes of Mirallas, Bolasie, Sandro and Besic who I assume the club cannot shift on permanent deals.

The short-term are Vlasic and Onyekuru.

I would not be against Holgate having 6 months under Bielsa provided he plays every game and at centre back, not right back.

...it surprises me that fans think we can not only select where our players go and which coach they play for but also demand what position they play and a guarantee of selection.

Our players have to earn a place wherever they go and will ultimately play wherever the new manager wants them to play. It’s being part of that process that will ultimately determine if they have what it takes.

Galloway went to West Brom and dipped. The same challenge will face Holgate and it’s up to him to impress.

We can actually put financial penalties in place if they don’t play.

I agree but it would be better for him to play centre back as I think that will be his ultimate position. If he does well if we decide against keeping him it should boost the fee. Hopefully he has seen what happened to Garbutt and Galloway and makes the most of what is a very good opportunity.

....I have a view that first team squad members who go out on loan are doing so because they are not in the Manager’s plans. It’s highly unlikely they’ll ever be in the Manager’s plans. If a player impresses then we might be able to move him on but if they fail they can become an expensive liability.

It’s a risk, we need to move them on when we can.

it will be good that he will play (presumably), but that could make us look absolute fools if one of Mina / Zouma / Keane get injured
