Regardless of the pairing, we need a commanding centre half who takes charge of the defence. All of our central defenders bar Godfrey are far too passive in their general play. We need leadership.

He’s awful in the air too
He is one of those players who has not improved this season.He is not good enough to be a utility defender or a starter at the moment.Just seems too casual and over confident,which are not the attributes we need in our defence.
Agree he has had a poor season.
I think the ability is there but for some reason it's not happening for him.
.....I get ‘laughing e-moji’s’ when I say Holgate shouldn’t start games when others are fit. I understand Godfrey p,aging where he did to nullify Son (and the attacking LB who looked forlorn up against him). If Keane/Godfrey played CB last night, with Coleman RB I think we win that game.

We all see the game differently and I thought Holgate was made to look worse than he was by Keane's performance.

My thoughts on Holgate is that I think he might be better suited to being a midfielder to a central defender. Part of it is size, but also mentality.
I played CM in my youth before moving back to playing CB or a sweeper role. The roles are different. In midfield you are more proactive, it's a more "glass half full" position where you are looking to impose yourself. At CB it's about avoiding mistakes.
I watch that goal yesterday, and him going for the diving header, and it's the mindset of a midfield player, not a CB. He's not wrong for wanting to attack the ball, but the percentage play is to leave it to Keane, and stick with Kane. He kind of forgets Kane and goes to attack the ball. It's fine if you're on the half way line, the downside of a ball flicking past you is not that great. In the box though, the consequences are enormous.
We currently have a CB who's comfortable on the ball, quite quick, aggressive, mobile etc. If we were a top team, maybe we can get away with his instincts, but for me he would suit us better in midfield. Oddly, I have never seen him have a bad game in midfield.
They know more than me, but I'd be tempted at moving him one forward and probably keeping him, as you say as a squad man. If we wantt o reduce the squad size, which we do, then there's always a role for players who can cover multiple positions.

Very poor again has to be replaced this summer.
I just think he’s a very average bottom half Premier League defender. Will be one of those that flits between the likes of Palace, Wolves, Southampton, Norwich etc every couple of seasons.
He doesn’t have that in him, he seems like a centre back that’s flimsy and scared of getting himself hurt. Will never be the type to stick his body on the line. Unfortunately he’s nowhere near as good as he thinks he is on the ball either.

Don’t know if it’s already been mentioned, but for their second goal Keane shouted for Holgate to leave the ball, but he went for it anyway which caused the problem!
