Had a lovely bit of skill near their box one time and, as people said, looked confident and assured. Crossing is not a strong point, though.

Didn't help that the England midfield (and Redmond) had apparently already gone on their holidays and he ended up the main attacking focus along with hitting it long for the Chelsea forward.

I think, unfortunately, he might end up a classic in-betweener. Not dangerous enough as a full back and not chunky enough as a centre back. Saw a few times today that his defensive heading is not very good.

if he was given a run of games in his proper position this would get better, plus at only 20 he hopefully will have a bit more filling out to do.

I never said I rated Ben Chilwell as a player but his crosses were better. Look how many times in the first half Holgate had a ton of space and either hit the first man or cleared the last man. He's a useless modern day full-back but I forgive him, as he's not a full-back.

How was Lilian Thuram's crossing from right back mate?

A lot better than Holgate's. Thuram was another CB playing RB but was actually useful.

Not sure why you're the only person on this forum defending him as an attacking outlet.

I've not once commented on Holgates attacking prowess.

To be fair to Holgate, I think he was pretty excellent last season at 20 years of age in doing what it was hoped he would do:
  • act as a stand-in for Coleman, if necessary
  • play the centre back on the right if we are playing three at the back
I'm sure he knows himself that he has to improve his crossing and he does give us the option to set up in different ways. I hope he does develop in the way that everyone would like and that we have some decent competition at both full-back spots (as well as elsewhere). (Equally I think Kenny has stuff to prove as well, but that's for another thread.)

Well you're vehemently trying to convince us he's a right-back. I'd have to ask if you'd like him to say be Everton's first choice next season or Kenny? CB vs RB.

I'm saying he can play both positions.

In a 433 we really need a more attacking player so id go with Kenny but Holgate would be good if we needed to be more defensively minded.

He's no Seamus, we've been spoilt all this time and didn't realise it.

Holgate either needs a month off for crossing practice or a loan period as centre half somewhere, preferably overseas.

One to keep and develop (better tackler than Stones already)

Right back or right wing back has been a problem for us since Alex Parker in the 60s, In our good years we used a right winger to
cross the ball, Trevor Steven used to help out with Gary Stevens defensive duties. Deulofeu could cross the ball but could not defend,
Coleman could defend but could not cross the ball, in effect we needed 2 men to do one job, all the top teams are better off than us.
We have been so lucky with Baines on the other flank, since Baines injuries and probably age now, it has high-lighted Colemans
obvious weaknesses. WE should have been looking for a proper right back for years. I don't know if it's true but surely not! Has Coleman been promised when he's back, a 3 year contract and the Captains job. I can only hope that it's on the Titanic.
As for any wing back, if you can't kick the ball where you want it to go, don't come to Everton.
