The point of playing Downing or Milner on the left is so we have abit more defensive cover than just Cole. But if you are going to do that, why not just put Baines left mid? Seriously - he is far better attacking than Downing is, and far better defensively

I've watched plenty of Lyon this year, and on crosses Lloris is woeful. Every other aspect is outstanding. I would even start Carroll.

Cos he's rubbish on the wing, he's even said so himself. Additionally, a big part of his game is running into space from further back...a winger hardly gets that and you'll get the "coleman" effect - fill the space, stop his game.

For all his averageness, Downing is still a winger. Baines isn't
