McCain Racist?

Nebbiolo

Valuation: £108 million
This caused a few raised eyebrows when McCain calls Obama "that one" in the second debate. The charge by some, but certainly not all, is that the comment was racially motivated. I mean, it's certainly insulting to call someone "that one". At the best, it makes the "one" sound like a piece of meat.Would he have called Obama "that one" if Obama was a white republican? I doubt it. But racially motivated? I don't know myself. You decide.

Not sure without hearing what was said but there is a lot of racism everywhere plus the U.S has never had a black president. He's not gonna be liked by everyone but yes saying "that one" sounds insulting. Bit like us saying "that lot" about our lovely neighbours on the other side of Stanley Pk I suppose.

Does not seem like a racist comment to me. It's more a comment that an opponent would make, and that's what they are, Opponents.
At this stage of any election race, any comment is subject to scrutiny. Any slight remark is taken out of context, in the hope of securing those extra votes that may swing the Election their way.

Absolute bollocks.

But putting on my sociologists glasses, I might say that Mr McCain is a product of an institutionally racist system and the words "that one" reflect, although not intentionally, the little regard he has for Obama merely in virtue of the fact that Obama is black, or at least mixed race. Would McCain have said "that one" about a white person? I;m not too sure.

Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable.

And would there be such a fuss about it if he had? No.

The only racism here is people thinking they see it just because Obama is coloured.

total my arse, everyone so quick to throw that word about these days

It is, beyond the joke now.

Nearly anything can be racist these days. This thread for example, McCain said "that one" - it must mean hes racist because Obama is Black?

If thats the case, it would be impossible to have a disagreement with a Black person without being a racist?

That is the problem. People are so eager to play the "race" card. Usually though, those people are not the same race as the ones supposedly offended....They just like to stir it up and show how "politically correct" they are.

No, I don't think so. The question revolved around whether McCain had an undertone when he said "that one". He may well not have had and is just a rude old man. But if you're at all interested in the motives and psychology behind linguistic utterances, you'll have plenty to read into how people speak, particularly when they're under duress. Go to any department of psychology or sociology and you'll find someone willing to run with a theory. Now I didn't say it was motivated by colour, but I do think it shows a distinct lack of class and says that something in McCain's mind wasn't seeing Obama in a particularly genteel light at the moment the remark was made.

Neb, I am a few months from having a degree in both (Criminology). 99.9% of theories are bollocks, an example being that McDonalds prevent wars.

As someone on the YouTube link your provided said;

I'm voting Obama, but I didn't see this as racist at all. It was condescending, but it's no secret that politicians running for the same position are just a tad bit rude to one another.

The whole campaign has descended into a farse now and is little more than a mud slinging contest between two poor candidates. The remark wasn't particularly classy but I don't think it was racially motivated.

The sad thing is, particularly in the current climate, is that this campaign has burned through billions of dollars so that these two prats can fling insults at each other on television etc.

By and large I'm a big fan of America and its people, but this election doesn't paint the country in a good light.

So you'll know that everyday behaviour is far more interesting and complicated than common sense dictates. You'll also be aware that immense pressure is put upon the individual to adopt the cultural preferences of his peers and that it is difficult to stop ingrained thinking from bubbling over into speech in times of duress.
