Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Good morning all on this white day ,a smattering of snow has given us a white coat for the now ,it will sadly be gone in a couple of hours . I hope all are well and had a good night's sleep .
Another clue for the same word -move fast .
The phone one might be a bit obscure ,if you look the digits go around the key pad ,it is the only time I have ever seen that , 2369074 .
Have a great day COYB

Morning all. Well I’m baffled by the mind puzzles and @barnfred’s question but my head is very fuzzy. I caved in yesterday and rang the GP and apparently I have a severe chest infection and told to rest. They also gave me antibiotics which are the Golden Fleece of the GP practice.
Not being a rester I’ve been thinking of how I can spend the next few days and so I’ve gone back to Duolingo but it’s too hard to think so I might read some of the books you feel you ought to have read but haven’t or need to reread. It feels like an indulgence for a doer.
Have a lovely Wednesday whatever you’re up to 💙

Hope you feel better soon. What are you learning on Duolingo? I started doing Italian during lockdown (absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Carlo's appointment 🤣). I haven't looked at it for years now.

Get well soon Val.

@anjelikaferrett surely Val is doing Greek ( unless she's fluent already).

I went to night school for 3 years in the 90s and was able to speak Greek quite well and even read and write it to.a limited extent.

However now just about all I can do is order food and drink ( and ask where eggs are in a shop and what time the ferry leaves 😂).

The one time it was useful was when we were hiking in Samos and wandered into a tiny hill village that wasn't touristy and had nothing on the menu for Mrs J so I explained in my terrible Greek that she was veggie ( xhortofagos @Gwladysover if you are ever stuck ) and did they have anything for her? They brought us some Gigantes ( giant butter beans in a tomato sauce, 1st time we'd come across them , now a staple for us) and refused to accept payment.

The owner said he was surprised that any tourists tried to speak Greek!

Lovely day today so time to get stuck into the bog garden .....stuck into ...bog....oh please yourselves.

Anyway have a lovely day everyone.

Well I have 3 on the go and it depends where I’m going on holiday as to which one I dip into. So I have Spanish, German and Greek which sounds impressive but it’s not. My Spanish is rubbish to non existent as we don’t go often. My German improves in December when we go to Vienna I have a revision session as I did it for O level back in the 70s. I try and try with Greek but it’s so hard. I used to go to an evening class many years ago and did well but if you’re not doing it all the time you lose it. Occasionally on holiday I will use it but although I can read and write it and understand most words you routinely see I have to really concentrate to get what people are saying as they speak so fast and by the time I’ve worked it out the conversation has moved on. My greatest moment was last year in Amorgos when a young Greek lady we shared a taxi with told me I had a good accent, but I think she might have been being kind. I always feel a bit uncomfortable if I’m somewhere abroad and I can’t read basic things like road signs and instructions and at least exchange pleasantries with people.
It’s a bit of a hobby really

Where was the night school @jazzy? I have searched for classes but never found them. The one I went to was in standish and the vicar’s wife was a language teacher and did it privately- about six of us used to go on a Tuesday night. We had a school trip to Athens to practice in the real world which was brilliant. I learn better in a group than in my own, so I never fancy having a tutor. My interest has dimmed a little since my pre retirement plan of retiring to Greece went up in smoke.

Hope you are feeling better soon. Two eldest grandkids both use Duolingo at school. I once accused them of playing on their phones instead of getting on with their homework. I was met with withering stares and the reply “We are, it’s Duolingo, Nanny”. I’d never heard of it, I wasn’t going to tell them that though.😂

It was somewhere in ( believe it or not ) Everton valley ) and the travel in every week after work ( no tea etc ) was the only thing that stopped me continuing but like you I've lost most of it now.

I can still slip back into French when I meet someone even though I haven't spoken it properly for 5/6 years.

Strangely I still.occasionally dream in French.

I loved languages at school and we learned French the traditional way focusing on grammar vocab etc rather than the modern way that came in when I started German. I think how we learned French was a better way and I think that’s why I struggle with Duolingo.

Well done you .She might have been trying to please you she didn't need to so take it as a compliment.

I’m reasonably fluent in three languages, English, algebra and gibberish. I don’t seem to be wired for languages…..
Me too , I did French , German and Welsh at school but only retained a bit of each and I’ve tried to learn Italian at least three times without success. Mrs bl on the other hand was once a fluent French speaker and teacher and picks up languages quickly , on our first visit to Budapest she was way ahead of me in term of picking up Hungarian words in a few days. Our brains are definitely wired differently !
