Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

I've decided what I'm doing for my birthday. I was going to take my neighbours out to lunch to thank them for ferrying me about the place (including 2 trips to Newquay airport about 40 miles away). So I suggested that we go out on my birthday. So they've booked a popular little pub on the river at Helford Passage which does great mussels and a crispy squid starter that I just love (sorry Blue am I making you hungry again lol) . Might even get to see Caroline Quentin or Roger Taylor if he's down here as it's their local. Then in the evening they've invited me around to their house for steaks and a few drinks. He's also asked if I want to come along to a darts evening next week. It's being hosted by his Rotary club and he's asked me a couple of times but I've never really felt up to it. But this seems like it should be fun and i do need to get out more so I've said I'll go. Think it's called moving on.
That sounds like a lovely day. Darts will be fun too. I'm sure Cal would want you to get out and have some fun. She'll be with you anyway.

Morning all. My Grandad was a Marine in WW1. His ship got torpedoed and he was awarded a medal for bravery. He was 17. In WW2 my Nan had to go and work in a munitions factory in Chorley through the week because her Mum lived with them so she could take care of the 9 kids they had while Nan was away. My Mum's youngest sister died when a bomb dropped in the street where they lived in WW2. About a month before the May blitz. She was 6 weeks old. The shock of the blast affected her lungs. So sad.

Seriously though, sounds like a great plan for your birthday and I'd say definitely go to the darts. Deffo.

I'm just watching a documentary about WW1 as it bothers me that WW2 is all that ever gets talked about. I realised I knew nothing about WW1 so I am educating myself.
There's a brilliant WW1 film documentary, made by Peter Jackson, which used footage from WW1, colourised it and added sound effects and voice acting. Quite surreal and very well done. It used to be on BBC iPlayer, but isn't anymore. Just checked, and It is on Britbox, which you can sign up for a free one month trial.

The best WW2 documentary I've ever seen is The World at War. It was made in 1974, narrated by Laurence Olivier, and because it was made less than 30 years after the war ended, there were plenty of survivors interviewed, as well as tons of footage.

I remember watching at least some of it as a 12 year old when it first came out and the episode on the holocaust had a profound effect on me. I watched the whole series again a few years ago and it's superb.

It's currently free to watch on UKTV Play. There have been episodes on YouTube in the past, but you might not get all the episodes. At 26 episodes it's a bit of a slog, but worth it if you're into the history.

Before we were married, Cal used to play in a ladies darts team that played in a league in The Dingle (the one in Liverpool not Ireland ;)). She was never that good tbh, she just did it for the social side.

Restrictions at funerals and pubs only ended last week so not sure how many will show.
But we will give her a good send off regardless. She was a woman who loved a joke and the banter.
Hope you're not suffering too much after yesterdays festivities mate, and hope everything goes well at your aunts funeral today. You'll be in my thoughts.

I remember watching that too. I would have been 13. I think I'll revisit it and watch as an adult.

Just been around to my neighbours for a shower. Not sure whether I've mentioned this before but my neighbours are also my landlords. He actually developed and built the close I live in which is on the edge of the village. He still owns quite a few of the properties himself and his daughter lives over the road from me and his son next door but one. His god daughter (the one who made me the veggie lasagne) lives next door. It's also probably a good time to give you a bit of an insight into their personalities. She is just gorgeous. Warm hearted, very caring and easy going. He is a bit more complex. Socially I get on very well with him and he is incredibly generous with his time as you can tell from my posting. He is also as rich as Creosus. lol. But to counter that he is also an absolute control freak and possibly one of the most tight fisted people I have ever met.

The house I live in has a very fuel efficient but also very complicated heating system built around under floor heating. But it's very temperamental and something is always going wrong with it. Anyway, since I returned from Liverpool I've been having a few issues and I've also noticed that my electricity usage is a lot higher than it should be. Having been away for a week with the heating turned off it should have been a lot cheaper last month. Because the call out charges for the designated heating engineers are so high, he tends to try and resolve issues himself. So this is what he did on this occasion. However it all went horribly wrong and I've been left with no heating and no hot water lol. He now has to get the engineers out to sort things, but he's messed things up so bad he needs to get a few new parts and it's going to end up costing him a small fortune. The down side for me is that it probably won't be sorted until the end of next week which is a bit of a bummer.
