Maguire who’s just really high-profiley tried to beat up police, proceeded to gets arrested and lied about it outside of football and then seemingly tried to do the same when playing on a football pitch (he’s that bad at defending) for a team that’s just tried to buy the league gets a place.

Keane who’s on a hot run of form for the most in form team in the league is totally left out.

I’ve been critical of Keane a lot in the past but since covid he’s been exceptional and the best cb we’ve had since peak Jagielka for defending but incredibly also learnt how to pick a pass and start an attack.
Terrible judgement from Southgate if he’s left him out on merit but hope that’s the case and Michael is sitting at home smirking to himself after that!

Basically.

We possibly have the best array of young attacking talent in Europe. But he insists on playing 5 at the back and 2 defensive midfielders in 3 home games.

Across the 3 games the 3 forward players were isolated. The only "back 7" player who consistently linked with the forward players with the quality of his distribution was Keane. And he wasn't even in the latter 2 squads.

Southgate has boasted about how his young England team have been able to connect with the Wembley crowd again. Well that won't last long if he keeps playing this formation and tem selection.

Best group of attacking players we’ve had in a generation: Kane, Sancho, Sterling, Grealish, Mount, Ings, DLC, Foden, Rashford, Barnes (rate that lad), Maddison, Ox. That doesn’t even cover the U21 talent: Bellingham, Hudson-Odoi...
Yet only 3 of them will ever be on the pitch at a maximum because of that TERRIBLE formation.

He always knew how to pick a pass, just look back at some of his passes forward for tosun when allardyce was here. The issue has been the players around him and having to play so deep.
