minor things that make you fume

The current house buying process in England. There's got to be a better way than the model used at present.
Ten weeks into the sale of mine and purchase of another and no end in sight of exchange of contracts.
Life on hold at present.
But this way guarantees employment to solucitors, surveyors, bankers and otherwise dumb middlemen from the upper classes who collect outrageous sums of money for doing squit little.

It's the British dream.

Didn't read much GOT while on holiday but I see an annoying fashion in the Transfer thread of describing aspects of players' performance using the word Digit, rather than Number or Statistic. (Digits are the symbols 0 to 9 or their names and can be arranged to represent a number. Alternatively, they are fingers, but I don't think people mean fingers.)

People who bid on things with days to go on eBay. You’re just pushing the price up for nothing. Have a budget and whack the lot on at the last minute. If it wins you’ve probably paid less than you would have.
You a last minute snide bidder too mate.
Love that.
I once had a threatening message off someone for mugging them with a second to go. " I've been bidding on this for weeks etc etc .. "
Lovely stuff.

I used to buy and resell a lot of stuff on Ebay and got bored of having to be around for the end of the auction. I found putting half my budget on early put a lot of the competition off and then I'd put the rest on near the end. Didn't make that much difference to the price I ended up paying.

Ultimately the price goes up because other people want the same thing. If loads of people follow the advice of whacking the budget on at the last minute then the price is still gonna rocket.

I've always wondered about this. I don't use eBay much but I thought the idea was you put your maximum bid in and then it automatically gets increased in increments until someone out bids you. I know that a lot of people don't use it this way and make a bid at the last second.

What's the thinking behind it? I'm genuinely interested.
