minor things that make you fume

There's something particularly perverted about traditional working class areas getting gentrified. The new upmarket businesses such as cafes residential schemes having designs influenced by the industrial heritage.

"OMG Lucinda it's such industrial vibes!"

Exposed concrete, scaffold boards, pallets. i.e. the materials 'poor' people that got forced out work with day to day. Makes me feel a bit ill.

The missus' new office is like that - they "had" to move (because COVID showed them they don't need everyone in the building at the same time and productivity was actually higher with WFH), basically across the street, brand new office building, hired a decorator for a bag of money and she showed me pictures of the office - exposed pipes/HVAC on the ceiling because they didn't put in the panels ( lol ), the load bearing columns are exposed and still just concrete, and all that, as you said. She has to go 2 weeks in and 2 weeks WFH and since they've been in that office - according to her it still smells like a construction site, 2 months later lol

The only actually decent place they have is the kitchen and the water pipes were so horrendous there they've had several leaks and had to basically ruin it, and now because of said leaks their office fridge is dead and unreplaced for about a month. Good stuff, glad you save on that... paint... and... cheap ceiling panels......?

Needless to say everyone there's super happy and loves spending 2 weeks in that fresh hell.

People forget that services are usually covered for a reason. They accumulate a ridculous amount of dust and aren't the easiest to clean due to all the details and small gaps etc. The concrete will emit dust if not properly sealed.

Exposed services look really nice if done right, but they're often a bit of a mess that was never designed to be left exposed, which it sounds like in this case if it still smells bad. Doesn't sound the healthiest either tbh, mate. Although I'm not sure what would be the best way to go about it.

They've painted the column but the rest is *aesthethic*, you know.

I love seeing pipes, HVAC and cables. So cozy.

It's that elusive search for 'authenticity'

A bit like yearning for the good old days of working with asbestos.
