In my old job, myself my boss and a colleague turned down the best applicant for the use of this word.

I used to refer to my ex wife as the lesser half. Explains the ex bit now really.

Its a simple catch-all term for people who have been going out for a long time, not engaged or planning to get engaged, but don't want to use the rather juvenile 'girlfriend/boyfriend' in a more formal situation. Its only a word ffs.
