It's an educated guess but it stands to reason.
Why are the super wealthy and influential folk so hellbent on grabbing up as much as they can, paying little to no tax and eroding the society that creates their wealth and power?

Them and us....
It is the outworking of capitalism. When these people have more than enough money for themselves it becomes a game. Money stops being a means to provide for you and your family and becomes a yardstick by which you measure yourself against those who are also super rich. You don’t care that you have more money than you could ever spend and that people are going to food banks, you just want to accumulate as much as you can as it validates you.
We witnessed the fall of communism as it went out of control and hopefully we will see the end of capitalism as it is now also out of control.
I read sommat on this a few years back.
The money is irrelevant. Its all they know. If they stopped, who are they? What do they do?
All they have is power and control. The money is just a by product.
It just baffles me that they don't realise that they're engaging in a zero-sum game
