Columbus Crew moving 1000 miles to Austin. What do our Murican friends make of this? Feel sorry for the genuine fans from Columbus myself.

An absolute disgrace from MLS to allow this to happen. But about what I expect from them.

Ive not followed it closely, but I presume Columbus aren't doing well financially? It doesn't look well on the league to have another Tampa Bay Mutiny/Miami Fusion/Chivas on their hands, so if that's the alternative, I can get behind movement. For all that some clubs can accomplish, MLS seems still pretty fragile on the whole, and generally a weird fit for the US sports model.

I don’t think this is the same thing. Tampa Bay and Miami were folded because the league was struggling and couldn’t find anyone to own the teams locally. Chivas USA was just a stupid idea to begin with. The only problem Columbus has is they built their stadium first, and therefore it’s not nearly as good as the others like it.

If this was 10 years ago it probably wouldn’t be a huge deal, but as we get more soccer literate here we’ve figured out that everywhere else in the world, the clubs truly belong to their communities. Moving them like this is really a betrayal of the highest order. Also annihilating the soccer culture in the very city that became the springboard for US Soccer to flourish this century is absolutely insane.

Well, their financial situation has not improved with the increasing talk of their move. Kind of hard for the locals to get behind and invest time and money in a team that was most likely gonna get ripped away from them.

even if they were unprofitable (which i don't think they were) the value of the crew kept going up. The crew were always a likable squad and were a must watch when Schelotto played for them. Its pretty scandalous, the city paid for that stadium and they are just letting this happen before the lease is up. I'm pretty sure that there was a wink/nod to the owners of Cincinatti FC (cincy has a well supported USL club and most of their fans didn't really care about the MLS) that they'll get rid of Columbus.
