I received an infraction due to "inappropriate language" by a moderator who goes by the name "Groucho".

Original message:

Dear Jxg,

F*cking hell Howard just send it if you have no other options...

All the best,
GrandOldTeam

I attempted to dispute the incident, but received a seven-day ban for doing so. I said (and I still stand by the fact that) nothing I said was illegal or offensive (unless, for some religious reason, you find "hell" offensive, in which case I sincerely apologise). I did not directly or indirectly insult anyone and I did not use any bad language at all.

I was prepared to accept this as harsh moderation and move on. All people interpret things differently and, who knows, maybe the moderator was having a bad day. However, I came across this thread:
http://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/64854-ALAN-MYERS

In here, a message not dissimilar to my "offensive" one was posted. An image of the incident can be found here:

Right underneath, a moderator has posted. Not only that, but it is a direct reply to the post. The "word" that I'm assuming I was banned for posting is repeated in the post and, via a reply, clearly its use is accepted by this moderator.

I'm not aiming to have this other person receive an infraction too, but rather, for there to be a fair standard of moderation across the forum. I used to use the Blueroom a lot. Poor and controversial moderation is what killed that forum and I wouldn't want it to happen here.

But that's beside the point, people should just not swear. For social and obvious reasons as well as anything else. It's against the rulebook so that kids can use this site and families can feel comfortable allowing young blues to read up on Everton.

Love the idea of all the family gathering around enjoying GoT, like a 1980's advert for Mousetrap or something FFS

the model mum and dad plus 2.4 kids all laughing joyfully at Davek's board bashing belligerence and Bungle's crazy sex crimes

Now things are getting interesting. It would seem that the rabbit hole goes quite deep indeed.

On the questioning side of things, without wishing to speak for the other mods, I like to think we're all pretty transparent about how we do things, and would be quite happy to talk over any decisions in private should anyone want.

Having said that, as Dan highlighted, this place is incredibly active, and there's only 7 of us, so if a particular member does take up an undue amount of our attention then it's not likely to end well for them. We're only volunteers after all, and time is finite.

You can use this url to see what Google regards as a profanity

http://www.wdyl.com/profanity?q=

enter the word you want to test after the = and it'll say what Google think of it.

Typed in quite a few words there with my beloved asterisks. All came up as false. Now I'm not sure relation between that URL and Google (in fact I doubt it's an accurate representation of their policies), but I'm putting a metaphorical point on the board to me, if just for my ego.

And to GOT:

I appreciate that you've taken the time to filter through all my posts to find my suspected wrongdoings. It's nice to see people take an interest in issues, you know?

Hypothetically, I'd love for you to sanction every instance of "poor language". That would be fair and equal treatment. However, given the circumstances, you and I both know that if you were to do that, you'd end up banning quite a few members through accumulated offences. Not to mention how ridiculous it would be and the flak you'd receive for it.

Why cant you just accept that you swore a number of times, which you escaped punishment for, then you got a little warning about it and move on? Learn the lessons instead of screaming MEEEJA CONSPIRACEEE.

If I was a mod I would just ban you, just sayin.

I'm taking the slightly risky position of assuming you haven't actually read the whole thread. I don't blame you; it is rather long.

I accept that this happened. I'm disputing the fairness of it. Might I add that I'm glad you're not a mod, because ruling with an iron first isn't the best method.

Rules are clearly posted that say don't swear even if you use asterixs, you did and got a warning not to do it again.

I can't see any reason why that isn't fair.
