I can clarify the problem here. Apparently the Ajax chairman was speaking to Bill and was congratulating him on the board making such a mess of the club, finishing with the words 'Kudos to Everton'.
It seems that Bill totally misread the comment. Easy done really .

My feeling, not based on any inside info but just how dysfunctional orgs work is that there are competing interest groups getting involved in the transfer process. And no doubt, some leeking to help reduce anger. It was the last home game before the window shutting wasnt it?
