You're fine to do that mate, providing you have the original there's nothing wrong with making a copy. If you have 1 copy (or even a few different such as a copy on DVD, another on your harddrive etc) of each of your 300 different films that you have the originals of, you're breaking no law & nobody will accuse you of doing so.

If you think about CDs, you can buy a few & then burn copies so that you have 1 in your car, 1 in the back room & 1 with your personal CD player that you take with you on trips. As long as you keep the original & don't distribute the copies there's nothing illegal.

It's only if you start sharing them with your mates or randoms on the internet that can get you in trouble so as long as you just keep them to yourself it's all perfectly legal

Yes, your 100% right, but what about torrent sharing, isnt the entire process considered illegal. I mean once hes done it, the copy he has wont be illegal, but surely the process in which he got it, might be considered illegal?

But anyway, **** it, you wont need to download ALL of them, just the good 1s.

This is all way above my head, I still need the help of a 12 year old to set the VCR. I can work Sky plus on my own though. This site is like a college for luddites like wot I am.

I'm not up to date with torrents, aren't they just filesharing things in the same mould as napster & Kazaa used to be? I'm pretty sure they're illegal & so I wouldn't put anything in the "Sharing folder" or whatever you've got. Just keep them on the harddrive where nobody else can download them & there'll be no laws broken.

That said, if you do upload them for other people to download the odds of you being prosecuted are absolutely minute

Its a tricky one yes.

I believe its ok to make a copy of something you own for your own personal use. Well no one has ever been arrested and convicted for doing so.So even if it does break copyright laws you wont be getting banged up for it.

The problem comes when you want to copy dvds with copy protection on it :

Can you legally copy DVDs? - CNET Reviews

To break the copy protection is illegal, even if the copy is for your own personal use.

Obviously copying old videos should be fine but the problem then comes from downloading copies from the internet.

Technically they count as copies and as you do not own the original copy (you might have a version on vhs but you dont own the dvd your torrent is ripped from) it breaks copyright law so is therefor illegal.

So Ghost i'd say you will be breaking the law but the chances of you being caught are slim and convicted even slimmer.

I'd say just do it, i've been meaning to do it myself for a while, i've got loads of old videos and it would be nice to have a digital version.

Of course the authorites would say i should pay for it because i'm getting a superior quality copy and by downloading the dvd i'm not paying for it so therefor depriving the industry of money so therefor ti will collapse and we will all gets aids, or soemthing.

But yeah i'd do it if i were you, just be a bit careful of where you download from.
