I think your senitment would be widely agreed on, if Schneiderlin didn't go missing for 8 months of last season.

50m seems to be the going rate for players that go missing for 3-4 of the last campaign

Two different players with two different roles. I’d keep both depending on the opposition we face.

Even an untested kid out of the academy - someone like Baningime - should be capable of offering the same level of sideways passing and conflict avoidance at a fraction of the cost.

As much as I like the idea, we aren't signing Kovacic.

That being said, he would be an ideal 8. Can also play as a 6, but we wouldn't have had a player like him since Arteta, so IMO would be wasted at 6.

And partnered with someone like a Schneiderlin would allow us to play 4411, thus allowing Sigurdsson to play his best position. Juicy, but only dreams unfortunately.

Kovacic is of course very ambitious. But an example of the type of defensive midfielder needed to play the 433 with a single DM.

Personally i think the DM is more crucial than then CM in a 433. However the CM are used, the base of the 3 has to be someone who is top notch...able to make the team tick and effectively its heartbeat.

Zakaria from clips seems to get into good positions to receive the ball, is a big unit and only 21.

Id take him or a similar type as the DM.

Key is to bin off Schneiderlin to some mugs...

It is general lack of real effort and disappearing from the game on top of not contributing nothing creatively that gets me.
I think any defence will struggle with what we are playing in front of them.

I’m not sure Besic is the answer but surely with what we’ve currently got he’s the better option for that DM role? At least you know you’re going to get 100%.

Kovacic is the dream signing, I would also try for Nzonzi as he's also exactly what we need shielding the back 4.

Its strange how its been very quiet on the centre midfield front when you consider how vital it is for Silva's style to work.

Those 2 tackles (both should have been yellow, the 2nd borderline red) spotlight his decline for me. The commentators were livid about the late tackle on Baines, but honestly that last tackle, wrong side, from behind, straight thru the legs....was about as bad. That could have easily been a broken ankle. That would have, in addition to a needless free kick in a dangerous area, been a brawl in the EPL.

Maybe he's lost a step, and it's due to that? Ditto for Williams. Regardless, they have become shaky if not outright liabilities on defense. Rather have Davies or Beni in there, getting playing time and improving. I don't see Schneiderlin being any better than he was today. He was very good when we got him, but that player is seemingly a distant memory.
