He hasn't started enough games for anyone to really know if it's going to work out for him as a midfielder in this country. Add another 600 pages if you all like, but that is the size of it at the minute.

Whose fault is that? Like I said before in our darkest times last season he was our best player but just got thrown out the team as soon as McCarthy was half fit again. He also performed brilliantly next to Ross in that QPR home win. He was one of our better players in the Anfield derby last season as well. This is Funes Mori all over again, doubting obvious talent because of the league he has come from. The lad is a full Bosnian international playing in the same team as Dzeko and has been tasked by his manager in man marking Messi on the biggest stage of all. Yet on here you'd think we'd picked up some pub player. Wouldn't even mind if we had a crop of great midfielders here but he's getting compared to Gareth Barry for crying out loud. Besic will (rightly) be thinking what more he has to do to get into the team. We fans deserve everything we get when we continually doubt top young hungry talents like Barkley Besic Funes Mori Oviedo Deulofeu yet believe that has been prem dinoaurs like Gareth Barry are beyond reproach. Cannot wait for Besic to smash his way into this team and show everyone how he has everything needed to be one of the top midfielders in this league. Aggression, physicality, technique, passing range, desire to win - basically the antithesis of our current midfield.

He's impetuous and prone to a daft mistake. He's got talent, no question. He'll get his chances. In the Anfield derby you mentioned he played as part of a three in midfield with Barry and McCarthy. I think we need that insurance when he's on the ball because it can break down with him.

I am surprised RM hasn't played him more often, but he'll get it right on Besic.

It's risk v reward again though. Barry gives the ball away lots (see Spurs game for example). McCarthy doesn't but rarely does anything with it. Stones used to give it away quite a bit as well. Yet as a fan base the only two midfielders we seem to have a problem with them giving the ball away is Besic and Barkley. When we paired the two however rather than a crisis of inexperience we got our best home performance of the season last year. Look how much Barkley has improved in the knowledge that he will be a regular. His ball retention is excellent now. Last season he was coming off the bench desperate to impress but just trying too much and too hard. Besic will only end up doing the same. Give him a run of games in his preferred position (please not wide left Roberto) and who knows he might improve. Older players like Barry or Naismith are not going to get better, they are already playing every week and giving the ball away numerous times yet we keep young players out the side because we worry about them doing this exact thing?

I like him too, legacy of the love fest on here when he joined us. He has his flaws but who hasn't ? I think he gives us much needed bite in midfield, something no one else does consistently or when needed. His passing %'s may be lower than McCarthy or Barry but only because he tries to push the ball on and will attempt the through ball / probing pass. He also gets forward and runs with the ball more (& better) than Barry and McCarthy.

Barry will retire soon or at least play less, Gibson will be gone, McCarthy is limited to a role in a CM double act and frankly struggles with form too often, Cleverly hmmm, jury out .. we need Besic until the likes of Ledson, Walsh and Griffiths make the step up .. however he has to start proving himself.

Lest not forget he's (supposedly) also an option at CB which I feel may be his best position.

He's only 21 I think he is younger than Ross maybe am wrong but still he's 21 been a new country for 18 months too been Injured for what about 5 months total ? He will show how much he talent he has when he gets his chance and a extended run in the team

He is 23, but yeah. Needs time. Will get time.

A lot of posters should calm down or shut up or have patience or all of these things please.

If by that you mean he is going to write the same thing over and over and over again in matt damon style, then yes i agree, he's wrong and is free to repeat himself as many times as he wants, he won't get any less wrong through repition

Oh the irony!

We are just in opposite camps on this which isn't an issue, in fact it's great that we can debate between prospects like Besic and players like Barry. After all, it's not long ago we had Osman, Heitinga and Neville in centre midfield.

I rate Besic as a raw prospect who's a tad too reactive for a slot in the first team consistently. I also think he's a currently an inferior carbon copy type of player to McCarthy - very good without the ball but is sloppy with it. If we develops this part of his game, he won't be proving anyone wrong as @Saint Domingo seems to suggest, he will have proved most right in that his potential was worth the time and effort in developing.

But again, when two sets of opinion collide and people stick to their guns, it's a bit ridiculous to state Doug is a wum who repeats himself when you do the exact same.

It's a forum. Enjoy the debate! We are all blues after all!
