Any hints, tips or suggestions for travelling around the south of Italy, is Rome a must? And any hidden gems or anything off the beaten track. Keep changing my mind but initial thoughts were Naples and then over to Bari/Leece area. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Good man
went to naples in the summer of 2019. Enjoyed it as you can get to the isle of capri and sorrento (both beautiful places) quite easily via ferry. the only issue i experienced was the waste management dept. was on strike when we went and there was piles of rubbish at the end of each street corner...

I could be wrong but I think that dispute has been settled now.

you're probably right. another thing, funnily enough my nana told me to do the mount vesuvius tour backwards as theres less traffic also less stopping and starting with the tour guide. surprisingly effective...

Is the city of Naples cheap say for food and drink?

Went last year.
IMO the Amalfi coast is overrated.
My tip is to travel by sea and avoid the roads.
Sorrento, Herculeneum, Pompeii, Positano, Ischcia and Capri all with a visit.

That's the thing, myself and herself went to Greece, we went slightly off the beaten track, still went to Athens mind but we had a great time, always wanted to see Naples and thought I could do something similar this year in Italy but Naples is far more touristy that i initially thought.
