The interview process of a football manager appointment should be a very minor point. Anyone can talk a good game in an interview. You should be judged on your previous work, your success or failure and your methods in those jobs.
If the board have genuinely been talked around in an interview process then that does not bode well.

In fairness (and in no way advocating his appointment) that sounds like he set up the team to play to their strengths (or lack of them) which I don't think is something you can criticise too much.Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle generally set up in a 5-4-1 formation for the majority of the 2018/19 season. Under Rafael, Newcastle were a very defensive-minded side. Benitez has always had a reputation for being a very pragmatic and tactically brilliant coach. At Newcastle, it was no different, his football was not easy on the eye.
Newcastle typically allowed the opposition to build out from the back with minimal pressure.

He's a pragmatist similar to Ancelotti, though obviously not as successful. He played very defensively at Newcastle as it suited their squad at the time. Literally their only attacking threats whilst he was there were Rondon, Perez & Shelvey - hardly the most fearsome trio that. He's also on record saying that Ashley took the piss and basically wouldn't back him to add any significant quality.
That kind of footy won't stand up long term at Everton, and it was the same case for Ancelotti.
Ultimately the hope is that IF Benitez genuinely feels he can turn us into a top side as long as he's sufficiently backed then that's something that Moshiri et al will be hanging their hat on... but it's a huge risk.
He was there for three years mate and didn't change the style of play even once. In fact, he signed players to suit that style. Look at the utter turd he brought into that club to go into his team.
