it was. The great Carlo Ancelloti served up a worse season after being given big funds than Roberto Martinez.

People were distraught when he went to Madrid, but Martinez was actively chased out of this club
Dear me…the players had stopped trying for him, can you actually not remember the 3-0 defeat at Sunderland or the embarrassment of getting thumped 4-1 by Leicester after they’d been on the ale for 3 days after winning the league?

His time had come to an end.
Wigan had managed to stay in the PL until he got hold of them and before you ask, yes I remember they won the FA cup, but those things do happen sometimes.
Remember his Wigan team losing 9-0 at Spurs?

Nobody can take a manager seriously who buys (and plays) Alcraraz and bought Funes Mori when VVD was available. The fella was an utter joke towards the end. Who can forget maulings vs fat sam's Sunderland to keep them up and Leicester strolling through us after they'd already won the league and been on the ale all week.
Just wrote pretty much the same thing

we finished 11th in both seasons and went deep into cup comps. He had very little money, in 1 of those seasons we scored near on 60 league goals.

Now the much loved Carlo had us finish 10th, with no cup runs with big money signings and scoring 48 goals.

i know which one was eye piss.. and it wasn't Roberto's team
"Deep into cup coms" isn't too hard when you have easy draws. Martinez spent about £90M, and apart from Lukaku and Barry, his signings were mainly dross - Kone, Besic, Alcaraz, Funes Mori and, of course, to crown it all, Oumar Niasse for £12m, which closes any discussion on his record in the transfer market. That's before you start on his lack of preparation for set pieces, his neglect of ensuring basic fitness so that we looked absolutely shot after 70 minutes, and our dreadful record on minor injuries. On top of all that, endless press conferences declaring awful performances as being "phenomenal".

Pretty sure we got Funes Mori cos we couldn't afford the paltry 12m for VVD, and FM was 2/3rds that price...

He got fired for a reason. No Martinez please.

I would say we would be looking for a younger manager than Carlo (62) who has worked with a director of football and plays a flexible formation around 4-3-3/3-4-3/4-2-3-1

Based on that, managers linked (in no particular order):
Graham Potter - Brighton (contract 2025)
Christophe Galtier - Lille (contract 2022)
Nuno Espirito Santo - recently Wolves
Rudi Garcia - recently Lyon
Sergio Conceicao - Porto (contract 2024)
Eric ten Hag - Ajax (contract 2023)

I am a fan of Conte because I want a manager who had a passionate personality but ultimately it would be too rich for us at the moment.

I believe we received money from Real, £11m a season contract until 2024, as a buyout so I would expect we got around £8/10m so this could be used in negotiations with a new manager who is contracted.

Seen a few figures mentioned as compo for some of the other candidates. Did we not get a decent package from RM? Carlo was under contract for another 3 years wasn't he? Surely we must be making a net positive in the compensation stakes?

You get at least a year for compo and maybe a few quid on top, so at least 11m

Can't believe people forget how bad things were getting with him. He would have took us down at some point if we persevered with him 100%
Anyone wanting Martinez back needs to read this match report and keep re-reading it until they’ve understood it.
