It could very easily be that the Friedkins needed a sacrificial lamb to quell supporter unrest, and was able to promise her the Everton job as a carrot to get her to quit.

Edit: Her children had to have a police escort to school. They are 3 and 8...

If so, I can understand why she quit. Nobody needs to take those risks.
