New Everton Stadium

And the idea that we should commemorate losers and mediocrities - the vast, vast majority of everybody to play for us since 1988 - is also for the birds. If you didn't win a league or cup or both with us, you would need to be very exceptional indeed to earn inclusion here. Baines is about as far as I would go of the last 25 years. I could make an exception for Cahill on the basis of his scoring records in derbies. But then people like Paul Rideout, who actually scored the winning goal in a cup final, should be knocking on doors too. It's why the likes of Coleman should not be next or near this.
None of them should be on there if they haven't won a trophy.

Is there space to add more legends?
This is only the first section. There's a load nore stones to be added after these. Not sure if it follows a similar theme, with legends woven in. Has it been timelined at all, starting with the earlier players and continuing through, I only know Ted Sagar is on the left, which would make sense if it works in that way. I haven't watched any of the drone videos.

If so, the likes of Cahill might be added. There might also be some placeholders for future legends after we win the lot

Says it all? Like you didnt watch it? He kept Mark Hughes in his back pocket that day. I'm sure he was only around 20/21 aswell.
I did, I was 17, 30 years ago. I used my fake ID to get in to the pub at 11am, was fairly drunk by the time the game was on.
Forgive me if I'd forgotten that Unsworth did a good job on Mark Hughes.

I stand by Unsworth not belonging in the pantheon of Everton greats.

I see where you're coming from but I'm not sure I completely agree with this. Baines, for example, would have fitted straight into our 60s and 80s teams. If he was in the 70s team that almost won the title, maybe he would have been the difference.

You can be a great player in an average team. It's just unfortunate you don't have players of enough quality to win anything.

For me Baines is up there. Kachelskis close, but doesn't have the longevity. He certainly would have fitted into our top squads though. Not sure who else. You could win titles and cups with Pickford in goal imo. Cahill was great but a battler in those kind of teams. Probably not a championship winning player.

I’ve never really agreed with this idea. You can be a legend/hero/icon without winning trophies I think. I was brought up to believe Dave hickson was a legend and it was only years later I found out he’d been relegated with us and played a couple of years outside the top flight. Scoring a goal in a cup final puts you into folklore, it doesn’t make you a legend.

He was great that day and was pretty good in the first year or so of Royle’s tenure. He never really progressed tho and only got the one England cap, against Japan I think.

For a Premier League footballer I used to wonder why he didn’t do something about his weight as well.

I don't disagree - but when you have to honour only a select group of players, those with the greatest and most significant achievements should take precedence. I would have Baines in there - he won nothing. But he was a magnificent technical player, and there should be a place for players who would have adorned even our great sides but had the misfortune of playing through the Kenwright decline. But, by the same token, younger fans need to accept that many of their heroes were not particularly great in historical terms. For example, Coleman shouldn't set foot in there if Gary Stevens isn't in there. By your own logic, being a loyal servant, admirable as it is, doesn't make you a legend.

I don't want to be churlish about Coleman. God knows, we need a few Irish players in there - though I wonder what happened the likes of Farrell and Eglington (who, like Seamus, made hundreds of appearances for us in a low period for the club). I think Seamus is popular enough to merit a place. The bigger point I'm making is really that we shouldn't give the players of what has been a demonstrable low for this football club the same status as those who played for what was then a top club. So, by all means, find room for Duncan, Baines, Coleman, and a few others - but ensure that the players of recent sides are kept to a minimum. We have a glorious history. Getting onto Everton Way should be a privilege - not a given. Membership should, overwhelmingly, favour our champions and cup winners. Let's use it to drive standards, not reward mere sentiment (though that should also have a place, albeit a modest one).
