Newcastle Utd (and Viz)

I didn't

Was it one of these "Mike Ashley was actually a really good owner and the Newcastle supporters didn't appreciate him properly" takes that I've been seeing here and there?

No. He's good friends with Ashley though as you say. Essentially though he stated Ashley was keeping very quiet about this, because privately he doesn't feel the funds are there (or he hasn't seen them) and he doubts the commitment of the Saudi's. He's a bit sick of being accused of not pushing it forward, so feels if he agrees everything, they will be forced to show him the funds, which to date they haven't done.

I just found it interesting. It may be they just don't want to show Ashley the funding (but this is very very unusual). We know the Saudi investment arm have the funds in an abstract sense, but whether they are making them all available to Staveley or not is open to question.

My own take is they will have the funds for the takeover. However I really don't think this is going to be the sort of priority for their investment arm some think it is. I think Staveley will be running the club (or her people) and she will need cooperate it as you might a fairly standard business. Maybe they have a bit of a blitz early doors, but doubt it remains consistent over the long term.

Isn't city kind of trying to emulate it? Don't they have a spanish club plus NYCFC, and maybe an aussie club? I honestly don't know about the last one

They're invested in NYCFC, Melbourne/Sydney, can't remember which one. Think there's an Abu Dhabi club too. As for the Spanish club, think they just have a link because of Pep and his family being involved, rather than an investment.

The clubs in City's CFG (City Footballing Group) are:
  • Manchester City F.C.
  • New York City FC.
  • Melbourne City FC.
  • Yokohama F. Marinos.
  • Montevideo City Torque.
  • Girona.
  • Sichuan Jiuniu.
  • Mumbai City

Jesus, the responses of the Newcastle fans here, who are supposed to be representatives of their club is grim. Wish for nothing but failure for them - a working class town happy for others to die so they can get some dollar.

'The involvement of Saudi Arabian wealth in the takeover is not a concern right now and ultimately any new owners will be judged like all owners are judged – by how they treat the fans and how they run the football club. Getting those two things right is the most important thing.'

'I also understand the misgivings regarding sportswashing, but I’m willing to give the Saudi PIF the benefit of the doubt and hope that their involvement in this project hints at a willingness to change and modernise.'

'It may be terrible to say, but having boundless sums of money really is the nature of the beast now; if you don’t like foreign investment having an influence in football then the elite game is not for you.'

It's one thing to love your club and love the success but to not even consider what it entails, or worse to think it's a valid price is grim beyond belief. The horse punching, class traitors.
