Newcastle, Victims of their own Failure!

Who wants this job? No [Poor language removed] does. Its like throwing the Christians to the lions.

They say that not enough time is given to the managers. But I just think it was poor choices with the appointments to begin with.

Keegan - closest to success, but decided to not spend any money on defence, or invest in the future. Which is probably why they are being forced to buy big rather than invest in youth for the future.

Kenny Dalglish - Successful at Liverpool but only because of those players that were there before he became manager. Went to Newcastle and bought poorly.

Gullit - No experience as a manager really. Just brought in on his name, failed to see the worth in Shearer, and you can't do that to the loyal fans. (loyal to Shearer)

Bobby Robson - Was finished a long time ago. Too old to be an active manager, seemed to me to be a desperate ply to bring in a Geordie to save an ailing ship.

Souness - Brought in because with cash he was able to win big in a 2 team league. [Poor language removed] Liverpool up to my delight, controversial in Turkey and has failed at every place he has been at ever since.

Roeder - Personally I believed he was the man for the job, not a big time charlie, no big reputation. Much like our Moyes, given the time he could have done good things. But inpatient fans and board have not allowed it to happen.

Sam Allardyce - Don't like him, don't like his American Football approach to football. Think he is boring, and has no real credentials apart from bullying his way into the top 10. But, should have had more time.

Who can do the job? Who would want to?

Harry Redknapp is overrated, but why would he want to leave Portsmouth? They are a big club in Portsmouth. Doing better than Newcastle, and have better prospects at the moment.

Mark Hughes, clearly waiting for Alex Ferguson to retire. But he's got a good side at Blackburn and he is learning a trade. Newcastle would just mess it up.

Alan Shearer, what if he doesn't get success. Can he afford risking his reputation?

Houllier, well we know he's notable for cocking things up. I'd be delighted to see him take the Newcastle job.

Houllier was on;y a failure at the [Poor language removed]. Didn't he win League 1 with Lyon (I know best team in France etc etc) pretty much every season he was there.

I am not disagreeing with the bulk of your post, but I personally think Houllier is a good guy and a decent manager that somehow ended up managing the [Poor language removed], probably conned into it. I am not going to hold that against him.

Well he failed managing a so called big club. Apart from that one season he had. He just bought crap French players.

He was a good guy, until he started getting TFM Bug (Top 4 Moaners).

I actually thought Benitez was a good guy until he started buying non-stop Spanish and moaning at every little thing.

Houllier did very well with Lyon in the Champions League as well, and French teams don't succeed in that very often. He's also had a big part to play in the youth system in France, so it was probably a mistake by Liverpool to get rid of him as they havn't done any better without him (CL aside).

They are lucky fuckers, make no mistake. They shouldn't have been in the first one in the first place. And lord knows how they fluked the second one.

It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't fluke this one too. They have Inter in the next round who are the Italian team that I've followed pretty much since Italia 90 and they're a frustrating bunch as they so often flatter to decieve. They're running away with Serie A again but it wouldn't surprise me if Liverpool didn't squeek past them. They must be the luckiest team in Europe.

It's not surprising Milan are struggling considering their average is 36 or something daft. Kaka isn't doing much this season either. He was anonymous in the Milan derby a few weeks ago and with Ronaldo playing as well as he is he'll be losing his crown this year, especially if Ronaldo does well at the Euro's or for Man Utd in Europe.

Bobby Robson - Was finished a long time ago. Too old to be an active manager, seemed to me to be a desperate ply to bring in a Geordie to save an ailing ship.

I wish David Moyes was finished, then he could lead us into consecutive champions league seasons and a fourth place followed by third place the next season.

Lots of respect to Robson. Was a great manager and seems a great person.

They were very disrespectful to him at the end - a manager who had coached Barcelona to trophies.

Ridiculous to say he was finished a long time ago. Even if he was getting on he 's still Englands best manager - anyone else got a CV like his? Managed Barcelona, Porto, PSV - won most of the cups and most of the leagues, was european manager of the year, and groomed Mourinho into the coach he is today.

As many of you will now I'm quite fond of our players and managers going abroad to widen their horizons, and as Leonbill says, Robson has done that very well indeed. He may have been nearing the end of his career when he took over Newcastle but he's still been the best manager they've had, and that includes Keegan because Keegan was fortunate to manage them at a time when a decent bit of money could still get you a long way because the CL hadn't tipped the balance quite so much in the favour of a few clubs back then.

Yes, well he didn't win anything. He was a great manager, and a great man. But he was too old to really do anything long term for Newcastle.

agreed. The media buzz is always - too many foreigners playing in the premiership, but I firmly believe the problem is not enough english players learning their trade on the continent or further afield.

How many english players play in La Liga, Serie A, The Bundesliga etc.

Hardly any. The english game suffers from a mono-cultural attitude. When our players learn the technique of the brazilians, the teamwork of the germans, the movement of the dutch, the flair of the spanish - then maybe we will have a bit more in the tank than the english blood and guts approach that has proven so limited on the international stage.

You only have to look at a player like arteta who has marred spanish (basque) flair with scottish/english steel, tackling and work rate.

So basically what your saying is we have no natural flair in this country and we need to go abroad to get it?

Ever watch any of the FA Victory Shield games? Plenty of flair players in those games.

I think it certainly helps, not just as players but as individuals, to experience different cultures and different ways of doing things. The Premier League is very fast and very direct, and England have shown that this approach doesn't work internationally. It would help both players and coaches to get exposure to different ways of playing, both technically and tactically.
