Irvine had a great reputation when he was working with our youngsters as manager of our Academy , he was considered innovative at the time. He didn’t make much impact managing clubs though.

His cousin, Alan, was a bit more high-profile in our Academy playing in the same England Schoolboy team as Michael Schumacher. The two of them, along with John Welch were in the same year at Cardinal Heenan and played for England U15, some achievement.

Hence the Neil Dewsnip connection. He was such an innovative coach at Cardinal Heenan, joined our Academy before being head-hunted by the FA. DOF at Plymouth who re-established the link with Schumacher and Rooney’s there now.
