Everton finally expected to announce Ronald Koeman as manager on Tuesday
  • Ronald Koeman has signed a three-year deal worth £6m a season
  • The Dutchman will be handed the biggest transfer kitty in Everton history
  • Koeman was the Toffees' main choice for the job along with Unai Emery

Ronald Koeman is finally expected to be confirmed as Everton’s new manager on Tuesday.

Koeman has signed a three-year contract, worth £6million per season, and he will be given the biggest transfer kitty in Everton’s history to revamp a squad that failed to fulfil its potential under Roberto Martinez.

The Dutchman had enjoyed two excellent seasons with Southampton and would have had a European campaign on his agenda in the forthcoming campaign but he found it impossible to turn down the overtures of Everton’s major investor Farhad Moshiri.

Martinez was sacked on May 12 after results had spiralled and Koeman quickly became the prime target for Moshiri, who acquired a 49.9 per cent controlling stake in Everton on February 27 and has been determined to make a statement.

Everton spoke to a number of other candidates – including former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, David Moyes, who spent 11 years in the Goodison hot seat between 2002 and 2013, and ex-Ajax manager Frank De Boer – but it soon became a two-horse race.

The main rival to Koeman was Unai Emery and Everton held significant discussions with advisors of the three-time Europa League winner at the end of May to see whether he would consider a switch to the Barclays Premier League.

Emery, however, had second thoughts about meeting Everton’s hierarchy in person and, aware that an alternative offer from Paris Saint-Germain was floating in the pipeline, he dropped out of the race.

When Emery got cold feet, that merely stiffened Everton’s resolve to get Koeman and he informed Southampton at the beginning of June that he wanted to talk to Moshiri.

That left Everton with the task of agreeing a £3.5million compensation package with Southampton. Koeman – who will be joined on Merseyside with his brother and assistant, Erwin – had 12 months remaining on his terms but that was not going to be a stumbling block for Moshiri. It remains to be seen whether goalkeeping coach Dave Watson or Sammy Lee will join the coaching staff.

Koeman has been away on holiday but it is expected he will be formally presented at Goodison in the coming days and he will be tasked with returning Everton to the top six, with long-term aim of transforming them into a Champions League club.

I thought it was going to be £5m

Three seasons is the right choice. At £6m per season that would be some payout!

Everton hope to confirm the appointment of Ronald Koeman as the club’s next manager on Tuesday.

Koeman has now returned to England from a family holiday and negotiations between the Dutchman and the Merseysiders have progressed over the past 24 hours.

The delay was purely due to Koeman being out of the country, but there is now an expectation of a formal appointment. Koeman has already informed Southampton of his decision to move to Goodison Park and a compensation agreement was put in place over a week ago.

Saints will receive £5 million for the services of their manager, his brother – assistant coach Erwin Koeman – and fitness coach Jan Kluitenberg.

Koeman will have a substantial transfer kitty on Merseyside and one of his immediate priorities will be a goalkeeper. He has been linked with a move for England’s Fraser Forster – inevitable given he signed the keeper a year ago – and there will be no formal restriction on Koeman making bids for Southampton players. Such a clause as part of Koeman’s release would contravene Premier League rules, although Southampton would no doubt be reluctant to sanction any other transfers to Everton.

Koeman is also eager to hold talks with Ross Barkley and John Stones as soon as possible when they return from Euro 2016 duty. Everton want both to sign new deals ahead of the new season. They are confident Barkley will commit his immediate future to the club but recognise there is work to do to repel interest in Stones.

Stones’ transfer request last season was rejected but Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are all eager to test Everton’s resolve once again this summer.

Everton hope the change of manager will convince Stones to reject such overtures and become part of Koeman’s vision for the future of the club.
