You're right but you also have to think of what Carlo tried to do in that game. He actually created a system where Niels and Jonjoe pushed all the way on as wingers in possession but dropped all the way back as traditional fullbacks out of it. Then he had Gomes and Gylfi (!) play as dual playmakers with the ball and try to work as wingers without it. Cafu and Marcelo wouldn't have succeeded in that mess.

He was solid in the League Cup games in a normal system and a real shot at it in the PL wouldn't have been a disaster.
