You're right it is weird, and its also a bit complicated.

Its on multiple levels but its first and foremost to distinguish between Nottingham Forest and Notts County. Locals refer to Notts County as just Notts so Forest didn't want that word association of their nearest rivals. It would be somewhat like having the word Liverpool in the Everton name somewhere. The same for County as their fans dont want to be known as Nottingham County although very few ever calls them that.

Geographically it doesn't help matters that Forest now play in Notts at the City Ground, and County play in Nottingham at Meadow Lane, so their names are actually the wrong way round.

Note:
Nottingham Forest did originally play within the City of Nottingham when they were first formed

Further Note:
Derby are sheep shaggers though .. that is indisputable!
So you're saying we should call them Notts Forest then?

Yes its almost as if the planners had never heard of cars and were designing a horse bridleway on tarmac. Welcome to the East Midlands as a whole!

I heard a theory about why the roads round your way are a bit odd. Apparently after WW2, and they were rebuilding Coventry in particular, the engineers had to configure the new roads and junctions to be capable of left and right side driving, in case the UK switched. No idea if true, but driving on the main roads in Cov is a bit weird.

The ring road in Coventry is my favourite regular driving experience. Literally no one knows how to drive on it and the junctions are a blindspot lottery.

It's not bad for traffic actually. Leicester on the other hand is the stuff of nightmares.
