He's still a slippery politician, albeit a charming one. Bit like Blair in that regard. He comes across as a man of conviction yet those convictions were ditched during the primaries as he proposed a bunch of wildly left wing policies to please the party faithful. That he then ditched those policies when running against McCain to adopt a more centrist tone may be regarded as sensible politicking but it hardly lends credence to what he says. Oddly McCain did the opposite and went from centrist to wing nut. Politicians have gotten where they are by being slippery shits so you'll have to forgive me for not trusting my well being to any of the buggers.

I wish him well however. The hero worship he gets, particularly abroad, baffles me as I can't see how this one man will have any influence over my life. As most here will know I'm a staunch advocate of small government so I would be quite happy if his arm of influence never extended out to me. Can he deliver on his rhetoric is now the question. I remain to be convinced because there are very strong lobbyists out there.

Will he let the inefficient behemoths in Detroit go to the wall as they deserve, and send a damning lesson to the UAW in the process, or will he pamper to those unions and punish consumers and tax payers by keeping them afloat? Will he ignore both the farm lobby and the coal states to deliver decent energy policy? He embodies the fight against slavery so will he abolish the farm subsidies that so impoverish farmers in Africa?

All of these things are so entrenched that I can't see him doing much. Will he influence Russia to stop using energy to bully Europe? Will he have any impact on Israel and Palestine? Big issues and I question how much influence he will have over them as charm is not going to be enough.

He's been elected on a message of hope but I think for me it's a case of watching that space.

dont know what all the fuss is about tbh, he's only their version of a prime ministr really, not as if it's a coronation or somethin' like that.

whats with all the press and media coverage, it's not as if it's a bill kenwright press conference ffs.

Your right the US stock market down close to 300 points not good.:(

The economic outlook is still bleak. Glad we have footie to fall back on.:D

it couldn't have helped that a major US city, the nations capital, was pretty much shut down for the inauguration. im sure the economy will pick back up now.
it was a strange site, watching a horde of people walk down i395, it looked like something out of a post-apocalyptic novel.

i endured a 6 hour bus ride followed by waiting in the blistering cold for 6 hours to get on the mall, i could only make out the faintest speck of him, but just being their i think makes it well worth it.

in total i probably walked about 10 miles that day, and was probably the coldest i've ever been, but atleast i got to be a part of history.

i was waiting to pull out of an alley in sydney, just 3 of us, nobody else around, and the pope drove past, he waved, had to have been to us cos no other bugger there (pope jp by the way not the nazi one), now i reckon he recognised me from heaton park many years before as he waved in my direction there as well. i dont make a big thing about it though cos....

a) i'm not catholic
b) i dont need blessing as i was born blessed
c) dont need anyone to vouch for me at the pearly gates as i am a locksmith and can let myself in.

bring back carter.

just kidding must be great for you to feel a part of history, especially in a country that lacks any.
*ducks

bush is gone. One of the evilest men in history, a puppet of the corporations, a right wing hawk, a bloodthirsty nudnik - someone who was willing to trade truth for profit, US and english lives for blood money, to flush environmentalism down the toilet along with a whole generation.

thus passes easily the worst president in US history. To replaced by someone who promises to be the best.

I have been splenetic in my comments about america and americans during the bush administration (after all once was bad enough but to vote that evil **** in twice was beyond the pale). However in classic american style we have someone voted in who offers hope to cast away the shadows of bush's dark abyss and replace it with light.

Obama is the first politician in my lifetime I have been excited by and whilst I still retain a healthy degree of scepticism his policies on paper and his rhetoric and shining intelligence excite me for the future.

And now finally he's in power.

No more torture. No more renditions. No more fobbing off environmental reports. No more war first diplomacy later. No more Israel or nothing in the middle east. No more ******* dumb [Poor language removed] red neck texan village idiot upper class white pernicious evil profiteering and right wing christian nepotism.

all replaced with hope, change and new possibilities.

Today. America, i salute you.

Leonbil,

You've always struck me as someone who's fairly educated so I'll chose my words carefully here.

You haven't a clue.

If you want to claim that George Bush is the worst President in US History, then you need to go back and get educated on American History and our past Presidents.

Jimmy Carter, to quote you, "easily passes as the worst President in US History." Since you obviously don't know much about Jimmy Carter, his administration, and the problems we had during his administration, I suggest you do a bit of research.

Get informed. Get the facts. Get educated. Then get back to us on "the worst President ever" bit.

I sure as hope to hell you didn't pay for the so called "education" that you received.

Leave the left wing, opinion based rather than fact based rants for the Daily Kos or Democratic Underground.

You have been warned.
