Old Everton Pictures

It was June 85 and I had spent all season watching the Blues winning the league and had just got back from Rotterdam after the final so my wife was pretty fed up of football.
We arrived in our hotel in Mombasa with another couple and neither of our rooms were ready so we chatted in reception for a while. I was sure I had seen his face before but couldn’t place it. It was only when their bags arrived that I saw his name. He played for Birmingham then.
Wayne hated Kenya. He was ill most of the time and missed the best bit the safari. We went into Mombasa town one day hanging on the side of a bus beggars everywhere. After he signed for us he featured in a pen pic in one of the programmes and his answer to the worst place he had ever been was Kenya.
He was a good lad. Down to earth with very dry sense of humour. One night at dinner some guy came up and asked for his autograph. He then said “ Thanks Allan”. His wife went mad because she said Wayne was always getting mistaken for his brother but Wayne just laughed it off.
He was a player for us who went under the radar scored some great important goals for us ;)
He went under the radar as you state because of his brother sniffer Clarke ;)
