Two giants of Merseyside football were born on this date: Tom "Pongo" Waring in 1906 and T.G. Jones in 1917. the nickname Pongo came from his extremely Warings sweaty socks in the dressing room.......

My late father raved about TG the book the prince of centre halfs is a great read - a player way ahead of his time...T G Jones was my hero in the 1940's after the war. Brilliant centre-half. When we played football in the street, at school, in Wally Hall Park, I was always 'Tommy Jones'.
