He was world class = end of.......I saw him once standing alone on the lawn near the finishing line at Newmarket’s July Course. Can’t remember exactly when it was, perhaps 20 or so years ago. I spoke to him, and told him how much he meant to me as a kid growing up supporting Everton.
He said thanks, but I wish i’d told him about the night we won the league in 1970. After the game I was in Everton Supporters Club on City Road with my Dad when Alan Ball snr came up and put his son’s winners medal in my hand. Just a nice thought thinking he gave the medal to his father immediately after receiving it.
Not a photo, but relevant to fans "of a certain age". I obtained a copy of a book only published this week " Money Cant But us Love - Everton in the 60s" by Gavin Buckland. If the rest of the book follows the standard of the first chapter then I can't recommend it enough. Give it a try.
he is great on the echo's royal blue podcast for stats. Will be buying the book for my jolly, good reviews so far...I think Gavin was Everton’s Official historian for a while, not sure if he still is. I think his day job was in the Civil Service.
I got my copy this week but it has been wrapped up as a birthday present for myself so I will have to wait till the end of the month. Not a photo, but relevant to fans "of a certain age".
