It was late March 1999 and Everton were in real trouble.

Despite a host of expensive summer recruits, including Scotland international John Collins from Monaco as the highest-paid player in the club’s history and a regime change the previous summer, Walter Smith’s side were in serious danger of losing their long-held, and much-cherished, top-flight status.

On March 24, with eight games left of the season, Everton were 16th in the Premier League, just two points clear of the bottom three.

Goals were in short supply that season: Everton had only scored three in the league at Goodison Park before Christmas. Duncan Ferguson’s controversial departure to Newcastle in November 1998 had only exacerbated the problem. The apparent solution, a 29-year-old loan striker from Turkish side Trabzonspor — hardly did much to quell the impending fear of doom on the blue half of Merseyside.

When I look back at many of these photos and see what great classy players we had. Should have won more trophies but we were beset with rubbish managers.
We certainly should have. Everton's history of underperformance is reflected in its F A Cup record which shows that we got through to the final in only half of our semi appearances, and then we only won half of our cup final appearances. I haven't checked but I'll be surprised if any of what I would label the true top 6 in the history of English football have such an underwhelming record.
