Old Everton Pictures

nerves of steel from Moggsy...seem to remember Sprake made a complete hash of it under his own posts and Charlton(?) had to handball it off his own line. ( The Pathe clip doesn't show the actual handball ) I think this was not long after Sprakes 'Careless hands' episode at the rs
btw that was me behind the goal near the top left corner.

That's pretty much right. Sprake was a decent goalie (welsh International) but prone to major errors like Careless Hands.

He collected the ball safely after an Everton attack at the Stretford End. But he was harried by an Everton player and panicked a little. Tried to punt the ball upfield to safety but miskicked quite badly and instead hit it only a few yards straight to Husband (I think). Sprake was well away from his goalmouth at that stage.

Jackie Charlton was still stationed near the goal line. Husband hit a lovely curling effort toward the unguarded net. Charlton had no choice really. It was going in. He handled and we got the penalty. Ball was out injured so Morrissey stepped up.

Remember it like it was yesterday. I was standing near the back of the Stretford End where all the blue fans were. The place went mental when it went in.

The next day the papers had lots of pics of Morrissey with his gaptoothed smile. Brilliant

I was in the posh seats to the right!!!! Dead on line with the touch line to see the ball barely touch the back of the net! Total delirium!! Think Oviedo at OT multiplied by Jags penno at Wembley!!!!

I think we had a few out injured or suspended (Ball) and Leeds were the favourites. just checked
by number 1-11; West Wright Wilson Jackson Labone Harvey Husband Kenyon Royle Kendall Morrissey
lined up 433; West; Wright Kenyon Labone Wilson; Jackson Kendall Harvey; Husband Royle Morrissey.

Tommy Jackson came in and did a very good job covering for Ball. Kenyon was young replacement for Hurst but it was a strong team but still relatively young. Leeds were always favourites back then! Very tight game. Longest second half of my life!!!
