I went in the boys pen in the late 1950's and dont remember any of that sort of stuff and never felt unsafe. In the early 60s there was no wire netting on the top of the pen, just the metal railings at the front. Every time the copper walked past the pen a gang of us would climb over into Gwladys St. behind his back.
It was a terrifying place the boys pen by the way. I’m not having it for one minute that Kenwright went in there every week, they’d have eaten him alive.
It was a bit different in the late 1960s onwards - but I only went in there only once and it was horrible.....I went in the boys pen in the late 1950's and dont remember any of that sort of stuff and never felt unsafe.
