Old Everton Pictures

we were in for Archie gemmill, ended up with Henry Newton, who knows,Gemmill could well have kick started that 1970-71 season for us?,great little dynamo.

Yeah, might have done. Busy, skillful little player, wasn't he?

Just looked it up and found that Mogsy had hit 30 that year, and in those days, given the lack of sports science, the horrible pitches, and - let's face it - the ale culture, you were pushing your limits at the top level so maybe that explains his gradual fall.

I went to that opening game v Arsenal who became double winners that season half time nothing had changed we were coasting to a 2-0 win over arsenal ..... half time in the Gladwys street it was as if the crowd were jubilant on how we had taken Arsenal to bits & one joker shouted to Bob Wilson see you have not improved pre-season.....
Fatal the tiredness from us was there 2nd half we fell to bits & a late deserved equaliser for Arsenal opened our eyes the team looked jaded ...... It was to be proven to be correct as the season got worse finished right down the table .... The Catt impatiently broke that team up never strengthened it properly then the following season sold Bally his replacements were inadequate to say the least his health was a factor in all this imo.....

From memory, West was a keeper who 'lived on his nerves' ... always seemed to be having some kind of manic conversation with himself and roamed round his area like a caged animal. Again, from memory, Catterick had dropped him a number of times during the sixties - to keep him on his toes, I guess.

Yes, I remember that story.

I don't know if there was a single reason we dropped off the pace so calamitously in 70 / 71 (from 1st to 14th for God's sake). Husband always seemed to be crocked and operating at 70% when he was fit (and I never rated Whittle, I'm afraid, despite his goals in the title run in). Kendall's crossfield passing seemed to go to hell; Morrissey either lost confidence or put a spanner in his left boot and Labone was not the rock he had been ... never a gazelle, but his legs seemed to go and he depended more and more on Hurst.

Bally? Seem to remember he was initially a bit sluggish but recovered. Certainly never remember the Street End criticizing him and he never lost that will to win.

I think the team needed strengthening at right wing, with better quality back up in defence. Although Sandy gets good rep on here, he just wasn't of the quality we needed given the situation with Labone. But, the money wasn't there: we were building that (to me at least) bloody awful main stand and John Moores wasn't a bloke to stretch the purse strings too far.
League wise, yes we were awful, but the European cup/FA cup offered us golden opportunities to kick on,one or the other or both trophies would have seen us building on that 1970 title, but bad luck, bad decisions, poor management, bad finishing!!would see us floundering as a club, things could have been so different.

We managed to knock the favourites out of the European cup and still not win it......

Ball, Labone, Newton, Wright, you could maybe blame England.

So why did Westy go to pieces then
Just sayin like
who knows if the 1970 world cup affected any player. But the fact remains that we had an awful 1970/71 season. And as for Gordon West. He was dropped from time to time by Catterick through the 1960s.... Replaced mainly by Rankin. Keepers can lose form. All players can lose form......
How did Royle.....Kendall......Harvey all perform in 1970/71. Don't think that their form was great either.
I admit that is was far too simplistic of me to blame the world cup for our dismise.
But think it's also impossible for me to even contemplate why West went off form..........who knows. West was a complex character........so who knows.

We had a bit of luck against B Moenchengladbach - Rankin's "save" should never have stood - he was close enough to the penalty taker to kiss him! Other times, the luck was out as you say. But, the bitter truth for me is that there wasn't enough quality in the team, or as back up, to get us over the line, despite the big names that we still had.

I know that people talk about the possibly bent refereeing in Greece but maybe they forget how laboured we were against them at Goodison.

As for Old Trafford - we could have gone in at half time 2 - 0 up but for the fact that Whittle tried a speculative shot (to be kind) instead of passing to an unmarked Bally in the centre.

In the 49th. minute, Labone went off, Sandy took his place and we were truly the goose that was cooked.

For me, it's not "Everton that" - just a lack of good investment in the squad and a couple of guys who were showing their age. But what do I know!
