Old Everton Pictures

Had a look at the value of 40k in 1973 and now. £425,323.46. So Bernie's total worth was a month's wages for Bernard the Bolt. I think the Brummie Bernie was better value lol
Too true, but this poor guy we never ever got a kit to fit him he was that big lol
Also the comedic Value of Bernie the Bolt was worth the entrance fee alone:D

I heard Smith had a pub/bar (or part owned it) and he refused entry to Bernie...and then Bernie made him even more ugly than he was.

No idea. Slightly before my time for matters like that.
Not sure if the Bernie tale is true. I remember that Smith bought the old Sutton Manor Miners Institute in St.Helens and renamed it 'The Smithy Manor'
He didn't last long but the name remained unchanged until it closed down for good about 4 years ago.

always wondered why it took Everton so long to sign a black player. Of course I'm glad that we finally did. But I do wonder why it took so long. We weren't a racist (I reluctantly apply that to Everton) club. I dread to think that we just might have been...........1970s and 1980s anyhow. I hope I'm wrong.......
Cliff Marshall our first black player from the Dingle even he got dog abuse sad but allegedly true......

true Joey ......true. ALways remember Cliff Marshall when I was a teenager. He was always in those team photos of the time. But he never played much. A quick check shows he only played 7 matches for Everton.
TBH I never gave it much thought at the time. But by the 1980s I did. As stated I did wonder why we didn't sign and play black players.
Most teams did by then.

I really don't know what goes on behind the scenes at Everton. I didn't back then and I still dont. We seem to operate different from most clubs.
Changing the subject........But are we going to sign any new players soon
( especially midfielders). Or will it all go to the wire.......we miss out on targets......And then bring in some unknowns........who never play.
You see..........I just don't understand Everton. Support them....yes.
But given up trying to understand them......

Be surpriing if some within the club weren't racist given how it was all through society. Certainly there were widespread allegations about Gordon Lee - fair or unfair, I don't know.

I do know that very many of the fans were. I had to stop going in the Street End after Clyde Best got dog's from the fans - only to find that the fans in Goodison Rd. weren't much better. If I had to sum it up, it would be a phrase I heard very much more than once: Everton are white.

Thank God we've all lived to see better days, eh?!

I was starting Derby game at home we were 3-0 down the bananas thrown at Barnes galore when he went to take a corner ......
