Old Everton Pictures

16th April 1977. Everton winger Duncan McKenzie battling with Derby County defender Colin Todd, at the Baseball Ground in a 3-2 win for the Blues -In which he scored one of them -
I read an interview way back in a book with Becky Valentine - He & Gordon Lee just never got on he was scathing of Gordon Lee who he rated as a lower division manager, as the team were capable of winning things he was just not up to it dour defensive etc - to me he was a fancy Dan luxury player who had loads of talent, but was not a team player - loved him on his day again smoking 60 cigarettes a day he admitted it did him no good.....
He is still a great Evertonian though -

Yeah, GL abhorred his cigarette habit. McKenzie would have been a close second for the gold medal in the Olympics of ciggie smoking behind Roy Vernon lol

Gordon Lee instead of congratulating Duncan for the goal below which won us the game - Duncan reckons he rollicked him - he was dropped him a lot unnecessary according to Duncan -

A few Everton lads took a caning from the Cardiff boot boys after this game. Some very sore faces in the club lounge late on Saturday after they had found their way painfully back up the M6 to safe territory.

Which game is this - the Latch, Asa Hartford on the line - George Wood, Trevor Ross ? Is it v United?

looks like Frank Stapleton challenging the keeper. As a Hartford (I think) played three home matches against Man Utd. We failed to score in all three games. Losing two by 1-0. And drawing the other 0-0. I think it is against Utd......
Would need to check who played to pinpoint the exact match and year.......

Lee was an idiot. My old memory remembers Lee putting Jim Pearson on in stead of McKenzie in matches..... And in a few matches playing Daracott in place of Andy King.
That's great if we win those matches. But I'm fairly sure we didnt. So what was Lee playing at............the man was an idiot.

There was no loved lost between them - DM was good enough for Cloughie at Leeds & Bingham at Everton, but not Gordon Lee?

I remember 2 years later how angry Westy was by Astle's flukey thrash that won West Bums the FA Cup
Bally quoted he had never played in such a one-sided game - the GV stated if he had been substitute he was sure he would have put one in normal time - we had a defender as Substitute Roger Kenyon..... We had beaten them 6-2 & maybe the Manager the players thought it was a formality they put ten me behind the ball - A sicking game to watch on TV never mind attend .....
Astle hit the rebound of Ray Wilson with his left foot, he only ever stood on his left foot... DOH
it flew into the top corner DOH
