They are shin pads I wore the in the mid 1960s like the cork studded boots, and case ball - awful
Especially if the ball came over and you headed the laces on the ball .....you had lines all over your forehead ......they were like medicine balls compared to the balllons they use today ......

those Shin pads must have slipped a little. Real ankle breakers . No wonder the likes of Dave Thomas never used them. Even in his era ,lighter shin pads would have struggled his game.
