Looks like Charlie Aitken, the Villa RB, in the centre of that photo. A hard, some times dirty, defender. He wasn't afraid to give stick back to the crowd either. I can recall one game at GP when not only was he having a running verbal battle with Blues fans but at one stage he picked up a loose sod of turf and hurled it at someone in the Goodison Rd crowd!

The famous arcs behind each goal were buit in 1964 when we beat spurs with a Derek Temple goal 1-0 - the club were warned as spurs keeper bill Brown had darts thrown at him -

Never liked the arcs. There are lots of photos with the arcs in shot, but I've yet to see one of what preceded them -- the metal, scaffolding-like fencing. I think they were only in place for one season.
Throwing things at opposition keepers was a normal pastime at GP.

There was a reason for that joey laddie. He outsmarted and out dribbled anyone who had the temerity to think they could dispossess him. Only the very few ever made Sir Stans shorts turn brown. And that would only be when they used tactics not within the rules of the game. A legend in clean shorts lol
The Father in Law reckoned Norman Greenhalgh was one of the few that always had him in his pocket in the late 40s

Allegedly;
A fair portion of the now famous collection...training registers, minute books etc...maybe even those pictures...were rescued (by david france in person?) out of skips as somebody at the club, in their wisdom, biffed out shed loads of stuff during renovations / upgrades and improvements for the 66 world cup

He went around auctions to retain medals etc for the collection.......

....can almost smell that picture. Burger sellers, horse manure around the ground on matchdays.
There used to be loads of them, also unlicensed merchandise sellers of hats etc on FA CUP days ......
Inside the ground I am sure they sold either Sayers or Cousins meat pies plus bottles of beer, but big queues......reasonably priced too.....
My older brother went to a game a couple of seasons ago gave his son fiver for 2 pies got 50p change - after a long wait ......
In future he went to a well known pie shop before the game & purchased them there ........LOL
It was not a cheap pie shop a well known one family butchers miles cheaper .......
Yes in the old days we did pay slightly over the odds, but he thought the wait and the extortionate price was OTT......
He's an OAP .....been watching the blues since the mid 1950,s ......Home plus away in most eras when he was younger....

The GV on Bally - TBH my vivid memory of seeing those two in the same team will remain in my mind for ever - The GV wore the no 7 shirt - but had a free roll in his twilight of his career - Bally was young fiery they were fantastic to watch magical the one twos etc ... they were both special , but if you read The GV article on Bally it nothing but the truth as imo Bally was the best Box to Box midfielder we have ever produced in England -
Today value we could not afford him ......
