I remember that game it was the first time I had been in the top balcony stand. My mates dad couldn't go and gave me the ticket. It was snowing and absolutely freezing. I know big Joe got 4 and Bally got a hattrick and I think David Johnson got the other one.

Born on the same date (6 October), but 51 years apart. Two of the most exhilarating Everton forwards to grace the Goodison Park turf: John Bell and Tommy Lawton.

This interview doesn't reveal much. I didn't see a lot of him either (a bit before my time) but whenever we are on the Big Match Revisited he looks brilliant. I imagine he was too much of a maverick for Bingham and wasn't given enough opportunities.View attachment 141167

I was a big fan of Gary but he has to go down as an unfulfilled talent. For all his ability he lacked that extra something that the great players have. Not sure what it was, self-belief, 100% determination, or whatever.

When he left Everton there were a lot of unhappy players at the time (2nd half of 75/76 season) but I think Gary let it affect his performances more than most - brilliant one week, may as well have not been on the pitch the next. He asked for a transfer, official reason was over money, and Bingham called his bluff and sold him to Birmingham.
