Hard to imagine today. Also hard to imagine someone turning up at the wrong ground. We take t'internet and instant access to knowledge for granted now. Wasn't always so, obviously.
My older brother's mate was a corker for saying it's OK - I know the way to any away ground on the Friday night after six pints of ale - then on the day we went of old Trafford instead of Maine Road -
Then a classic Crystal Palace away - as we saw these massive floodlights - my brother stated are you sure this looks a large Stadia - it was the White City greyhound track in London - miles from the football ground lol

I bet there are a fair few similar tales from pre-internet days. Asking directions from locals would have just been asking to be sent in the wrong direction ?

Another one was an away game at Coventry City, which in those days was hard to find - the same guy got us lost & we ended up in the middle of Coventry town centre after taking a wrong turning - Then a blue in the car came up with a great idea he shouted to my brother, hey look their fans are at the bus stops going to the game ..... offer one of them a lift & he will direct us there & know the parking etc - great idea.....

My older brother stopped the lads in the back of the car grabbed him in - poor soul was deaf & dumb it took a bit to find out, with a right lot of confusion - they flung him out on the cornerlol

They then spotted a Coventry fan shouted to this guy wearing a Coventry scarf - do you want a lift, in he jumped gladly & bingo the ground was 15 minutes away nice fan showed us the best place to park etc plus we won that day too...
