Imo he should have never been chosen for the squad same as when Butch Willkens etc were replaced by Reidy, Stephens Stephen came into the England world cup 1986.....when Gary Lineker got his shooting boots on ......
But his inclusion was the correct one…Wilkins‘ wasn’t. Mullary (and the England back four) was the least of their problems in Mexico. The rest of the midfield was- all average in that tourney- unlike four years earlier.

Imo 2-0 up v West Germany the keeper was our downfall - abet our championship winning side left out two of the best midfielders in the country - it would not happen today .....

Ramsey subbed Bobby Charlton when he assumed the game was won,
leading 2-0, and saving him for the semi-final. This allowed Beckenbauer, Charlton’s marker, to cause havoc attacking England’s defence.
Bonetti was at fault, but Ramsey made a bad tactical mistake.

HK cited Colin Bell as the player who Ramsey always preferred over him.

It was actually 2-1 when The Divine Baldy was subbed, Franz had started to come forward at 0-2 realising it was the only option. The game started turning when Grabowski was introduced and gave Cooper hell on the flanks. Bell came on and played well actually, created a chance for Hurst to make it 3-1 (which hit the post) and England were unlucky not to score a couple after his introduction...and were denied a stonewall penalty when Beckenbauer brought Bell down and a good goal was mysteriously chalked off at 2-3 (revenge for the controversy in 66 perhaps?)

You can go into all that - Bonnetti the keeper was at fault for the goals a certain Gordon's West wife would not let him travel to Mexico as she was then a concert pianist professionally & threatened him with divorce - He gave up his place in the squad as no 2 to Gordon Banks - his team EFC were champions - he had a great season ....

He often joked I might as well gone as we divorced later anyway - his understanding with Labone was immense too - if he had played that game I am sure we would have won - if you look at the goals Labby is asking the shot stopper Bonnetti - why did you not come out for that cross ......

Bonnetti was just a tremendous shot stopper, not an all round keeper like Westy .....

Bonetti is definitely at fault for the 1st goal and probably shouldve done better with the 2nd. However, Muller loses Labone for the third and he is just as at fault (which Ball also pointed out).
